About the Author
Gerald Graff, a professor of English and education at the University of Illinois at Chicago and 2008 president of the Modern Language Association of America, has had a major impact on teachers through such books as Professing Literature: An Institutional History, Beyond the Culture Wars: How Teaching the Conflicts Can Revitalize American Education, and Clueless in Academe: How Schooling Obscures the Life of the Mind.

Cathy Birkenstein is a lecturer in English at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She has published essays on writing in College English, and, with Gerald Graff in The Chronicle of Higher Education, Academe, and College Composition and Communication.

Russel Durst, who edited the readings in "They Say / I Say" with Readings, is head of the English Department at the University of Cincinnati, where he teaches courses in composition, writing pedagogy and research, English linguistics, and the Hebrew bible as literature. My Ivy League mentor impressed by improvements I made using tips from this book

I am in a Ph.D. program at Cornell University, but having already completed an undergrad and a Master's degree, I thought my writing was pretty good. However, after using the tips from this book, my Ivy League professor told me my work had substantially improved. I absolutely recommend this book to anyone looking to improve their writing. I also recommend "Making Sense in the Life Sciences: A Student's Guide to Writing and Research" for anyone looking to help organize lots of information into a logical flow/argument.

A Major Resource for Incorporating Others' Ideas into a College-Level Argument

This book could be used for advanced HS students in its entirety. With scaffolding, the book is a fruitful resource for explaining and supporting the writing of the college level argument. The templates, though they may seem simplistic or mechanical, provide helpful models and scaffolds for the many "moves" in the written argument. The book doesn't cover rhetorical devices, but I have found that teaching each separately helps students.

The explicit professional examples and the templates address one of the greatest difficulties in the writing of so many students, incorporating quotations smoothly, what "They Say," and helping students maintain their voice in what "I say."

I am writing my dissertation for my doctorate and this book is GREAT because it helps with writers block. It gives you phrases to help you get your thoughts going. It is extremely well organized and has been mentioned in several You Tube instructional videos I have watched.

Rieman, maker of reproduction Shaker furniture and coauthor of The Shaker Chair (Univ. of Massachusetts Pr., 1992), and Burks, former curator at Canterbury Shaker Village, have created a comprehensive, well-documented guide to Shaker furniture. While most Shaker furniture books illustrate the classic "period of gospel simplicity" from 1820 to 1850, this book illustrates all periods of Shaker furniture, showing that Shaker styles actually reflected the tastes of the time, simple when neoclassical was popular and becoming more ornate as tastes changed to Victorian. Beginning with a broad description of the Shaker religion, lifestyle, and furniture-making, the book progresses to descriptions of each bishopric and its furniture and artisans. Although this book contains more information than most libraries need, it is highly recommended where there is interest.

By combining in-depth commentary on the Shaker tradition with detailed technical information and superb photographs, Rieman and Burks have created the most authoritative volume to date on the identification and authentication of individual pieces of Shaker furniture. The entire range of Shaker furniture is covered. Most studies concentrate on the favored period between 1820 and 1850, called the "gospel simplicity" era, but this comprehensive survey stretches back to the very beginning of the nineteenth century and forward into our own. The authors examine every aspect of Shaker construction, from wood selection to joinery techniques, moldings, and locking mechanisms. Bible of Shaker Furniture

Terrific summary of Shaker furniture, bishopric by bishopric! Includes detailed description of hundreds of pieces of cabinetwork, chairs, tables and built-ins. Rieman approaches his task with care and the knowledge of a furniture maker as well as the care and analysis of a scholar. I would call it the bible of Shaker Furniture.

Not as new as expected

The book came and the dust jacket was torn and it had some water damage. Not enough to return but when the book is stated as "new" you expect new condition.

Excellent book, beautiful pictures; but see my warning below

Probably because it is one of the newer books on Shaker furniture, this one seems to be the most accurate on the provenance of the many surviving Shaker items. It appears they have done an excellent job of deciphering where a piece was made regardless which village it was found.
THERE IS WARNING HOWEVER! Don't be fooled by what they mean by "The Complete Book." They use the word complete to mean, that in addition to covering the "Shaker Golden Years" of 1830 to around 1850, they have included items from the 18th to the 20th century.
With approximately 400 beautiful illustrations, they can't possibly cover every important piece of Shakerdom. To my disappointment, they did not discuss the particular 12 to 20 foot benches of two slightly differing styles that I have seen pictured in the meeting room at Sabathday Lake. Nor did they show the small wall clock at Sabathday Lake that I wanted to know about.
The authors certainly accomplished their goals of descibing the various, differing forms used by the different locatations over the approximate 150 years covered.
For me the final test is, would I buy it again -- Abosolutely.

it could have been epic

Nowdays, mathematical modeling is moving from the realm of mathematical physics to the realm of (evolutionary game) dynamics. The lattter is an agent based theory that requires a psycho-ethical model (PEM). This outstanding contribution provides a way of such modeling based on the objective-participant PEM provided by the ancient greek culture. It is in sharp contrast to the semi-theological (and deeply flawed) subjective-individualistic model of Descartes and Kant. The classical model can help understand where romanticism and prewar german philosophical thought went astray (classical example Nietzsche's idealistic thoughts on wish-morality or Kant's supposedly universal moral principles which can justify one's individualistic ethics); it is the best cure against modern autistic view of the western man whose disastreous effects are now clear. Noting its objective character, it is no surprise that modern mathematical modeling of social/economic/political dynamics follows exactly the ancient greek model. This is one can see by analysing the structure of modern game theory.

The great value of the text lies on the exceptional questions and material. One could hardly thought of giving it less than five stars. Unfortunately the author's exposition is the weakest link in the whole project. Just to give an idea of what I mean: on pg 111 one reads: "His explanation is less provocative than that suggested by Nietzsche; in fact it is one that brings Bradley rather closer than Butscher to Aristotle's position on this issue. Bradley's theory of tragedy is presented as modification to Hegel's". And so it goes on. I wish one could read carefully this marvellous book and than compress it to a third of its size.

Nevertheless, this is an amazing reading that I wholeheartedly appreciate and recommend.

For the "Faithful" Steelers fan (pun intended)

As a daily listener to "In the Locker Room with Tunch and Wolf," I especially enjoyed the anecdotal insights by Tunch Ilkin throughout the book. But beyond that, I thought the leadership principles outlined in the book were not only true, but useful in virtually any capacity of leadership in which one might find him/herself. Even before reading this book, I felt there was a deep sense of faith-commitment in the Steelers organization. After reading it, my feelings were confirmed. While I began loving the Steelers for their hard-nosed style of play, I continue to love them for much more of what goes on behind the scenes and what they stand for apart from football. So to all "Faithful" Steelers fans, get a hold of this book and give it a read. You'll be glad you did.

Solid Principles To Lead By

The book offers commentary to how the solid leadership principles have been and continue to be a part of an organization that prides itself on humility, teamwork and consistent performance. I have been in manufacturing for many years and have witnessed leaders from both sides of the spectrum. The leaders that embrace these principles and flow them down through their organizations have that contagious humility that make them great.

Solid leadership advice.

I found this book to be a very enjoyable read with some excellent advice on how to become a better leader at home, at work and in the community. At a time when so much attention is paid to sports stars and the organizations that they represent, it's encouraging to look at the success of the Pittsburgh Steelers, both on and off the field, and learn to apply some of their leadership principles in our own lives.

This book is a great piece for anyone wanting to understand the basics of sound explained from scratch. Originally published in 1959, revised in 1969, the version I have is from 1978. Acoustics-the science of sound--hasn't changed; but the technology and medium we use has.
This book is a valuable supplement for audio pros. There are sections that show how to build a sound stage like the big boys, for example. A microphone section showing [now vintage] mics dissected. A lot of techncal stuff that modern audio books may water down so that it is easier for the novice to comprehend. This book is the real thing, and I'm sure the seasoned audio pros went to this book for information.
State of the art at the time it was written, this important history is still applicable today.

Required Reading, before spending on gear or studio

How many times have I seen people stumble into wanting a recording studio to "save money on recording" or that "It would be cool..."? I want to save them most of their life and more money than they have by recommending that they read a good textbook like this. Yes, it's expensive. $40 in 1974 was expensive, too. That would be over 100 gallons of "SuperChief" Leaded Premium fuel for the 70 Camaro LT-1, back in the day. A gallon of 102 Octane "racing fuel" at my local Tessoro station was over $4 a gallon on last look, so on that basis, The Audio Cyclopedia is a modern bargain, even at current levels.

Why the Second Edition? Transistors and analog tape recorders made some serious advances between 1959 and 1969, but only incremental advances since. If you want to know a lot about post-WWII film sound recording, hold out for the First Edition. Film sound is covered in the Second Ed, just not with such emphasis. The current trend in returning to transformer coupled circuits is well covered in the 2nd Ed.

Acoustics is well covered, but later books on acoustics add much to the material in the Second Edition. Modern test equipment makes measuring a room less of a chore. If you can measure it, you can change it or fix it!

If a person is interested in modern recording and reproduction technology, this is the book that is the foundation of most later books. There are others, like Langford-Smith "Radiotron Designer's Handbook" 4th Ed that are equally important in a more narrow interest , but not a single volume that covers so much in such useful technical detail as Audio Cyclopedia.

I own a copy of this edition and would not want to get rid of it since it covers some older technology that I find interesting (I even own and still use some of that old stuff). That said this is not the current version of the book.

The book has been renamed "Handbook for Sound Engineers, Fourth Edition" and is now in its 4th Edition. Glen Ballou is now the editor, and I wrote two chapters in the last two editions.

Amazon stocks the current edition which makes it easy to find and buy :>)

I have found the questions in this book, and the others which accompany it, to be the closest thing to the real exam outside the NCEES practice exam available.

I think it's just a matter of time before these books become the go to study references for the FE electrical exam.

Use it to get an idea of how the actual test looks like. All the books by Wasim are exceptionally great to pass the FE exam including some great tips/assistance from the author.
