...If a Techie wants to know where he came from...

This book is a great piece for anyone wanting to understand the basics of sound explained from scratch. Originally published in 1959, revised in 1969, the version I have is from 1978. Acoustics-the science of sound--hasn't changed; but the technology and medium we use has.
This book is a valuable supplement for audio pros. There are sections that show how to build a sound stage like the big boys, for example. A microphone section showing [now vintage] mics dissected. A lot of techncal stuff that modern audio books may water down so that it is easier for the novice to comprehend. This book is the real thing, and I'm sure the seasoned audio pros went to this book for information.
State of the art at the time it was written, this important history is still applicable today.

Required Reading, before spending on gear or studio

How many times have I seen people stumble into wanting a recording studio to "save money on recording" or that "It would be cool..."? I want to save them most of their life and more money than they have by recommending that they read a good textbook like this. Yes, it's expensive. $40 in 1974 was expensive, too. That would be over 100 gallons of "SuperChief" Leaded Premium fuel for the 70 Camaro LT-1, back in the day. A gallon of 102 Octane "racing fuel" at my local Tessoro station was over $4 a gallon on last look, so on that basis, The Audio Cyclopedia is a modern bargain, even at current levels.
Why the Second Edition? Transistors and analog tape recorders made some serious advances between 1959 and 1969, but only incremental advances since. If you want to know a lot about post-WWII film sound recording, hold out for the First Edition. Film sound is covered in the Second Ed, just not with such emphasis. The current trend in returning to transformer coupled circuits is well covered in the 2nd Ed.
Acoustics is well covered, but later books on acoustics add much to the material in the Second Edition. Modern test equipment makes measuring a room less of a chore. If you can measure it, you can change it or fix it!
If a person is interested in modern recording and reproduction technology, this is the book that is the foundation of most later books. There are others, like Langford-Smith "Radiotron Designer's Handbook" 4th Ed that are equally important in a more narrow interest , but not a single volume that covers so much in such useful technical detail as Audio Cyclopedia.

Newer Editions

I own a copy of this edition and would not want to get rid of it since it covers some older technology that I find interesting (I even own and still use some of that old stuff). That said this is not the current version of the book.
The book has been renamed "Handbook for Sound Engineers, Fourth Edition" and is now in its 4th Edition. Glen Ballou is now the editor, and I wrote two chapters in the last two editions.
Amazon stocks the current edition which makes it easy to find and buy :>)
