What's a tattoo book without pictures?!

I was really excited to read this book, and the stories are pretty neat, but I was completely bummed that there's not one single picture of a tattoo included! At the end of every story, I wanted to see how that chick's tat turned out...and had nothing to look at. Neat concept, but really lacking.

EYE OPENING WITH AN OPEN MIND

I have to admit-this was more interesting than I thought it would be. You see, being a mother we have and WANT to be included in the realm of our children's interests no matter how far off the wall they may seem (as long as it's legal of course) I do not have any tattoos and although I'm old enough to know NEVER SAY NEVER I don't have any plans on getting one. I read 1-2 stories a day in-between my busy schedule and now I find myself talking with the young girls I work with about THEIR's and they all DO have a story and meaning behind what they chose to have inked on them permanently. I never would have thought of that BEFORE reading the book. Realizing this opens a door for conversation with someone that maybe would not have been there before. I do recommend reading it-yes I would have liked to see some pictures too, but maybe the publishers will oblige with the NEXT book by this editor, my daughter.

Finally a Book That Tells Our Story

This book is a wonderful collection of stories from real, everyday women who have ink and are not freaks for it. It gives voice to those who proudly carry ink, even if we sometimes have to cover it to maintain propriety in an office setting. It even helps those who are not inked and have preconceived notions about inked women understand where we are comming from.
I have been inked for several years, to the great distress and/or confusion of family and friends. I was the only one in my family to have ink until two months ago, and very few friends of mine have any. I have actually given this book as a gift to family to help them see that it isn't so radical after all.
I have always been interested in tattoos in an anthropological way as well, and this book gives great insight into the "why" so many different women get inked, and why they have no shame in their art. It shows how very false the taboos surrounding women and tattoos are.

Advocating relentless focus on a single objective.

Business books are always an interesting problem. Are they a prop to sell consulting gigs? Are they stretched out one note ideas? Or do they pull off something worthwhile and can they really aid someone find the business success they are seeking?

Another aspect of business books is their audience. Are they written for a specific group or a general public? Are they preaching to an already converted choir to confirm their preconceived notions or are they offering fresh insights and trying to broaden the horizons of readers?

This book is authored by the very successful founder of one of the nation's great realtors, Keller-Williams. Gary Keller is targeting those business folks who want to find single minded success - the kinds of self-sacrificing, dedicated, and single-minded people he wants to hire and who will make themselves (and him) a great deal of money. "The One Thing" is based on the statement by Curly in "City Slickers". Of course, Keller adapts it to his purposes. Keller believes in focus, utter dedication to your one thing, and driving to breakthrough barriers to get to your one big purpose. Some might call it obsession. He is not a big believer work life balance - he actually rejects it and calls it a lie.

The book has a couple of interesting printing twists to it as well. For example, the key ideas are printed in red inserts. But the coolest thing is that he has pre-marked the book for you. In other words, the key ideas are underlined in what looks like pencil - as if a previous reader had done it for you. But the pencil marks are printed in. But they don't look like printed underlines, they look like pencil.

I am positive this book can and will work well for its target audience. When I was a younger man, I am sure I would have taken to it like a duck to water or like fire to gasoline. Everything he says here will work if you apply it.

Just remember that everything has a cost. Every success (and every failure) has a price. Nothing comes for free.

In my own view of life, business success and work are important AS A MEANS TO SOMETHING MORE IN LIFE. In my case, I believe first and foremost in family. I hear any number of executives talk about this as they are on their third marriage and fathering their own grandkids. Remember this kind of talk is cheap. Living real life is hard. What's that old saying? "You pays your money and you takes your chances." There is a lot of benefit that comes from having succeeded and getting the space and time that comes from financial success. But it is space and time to do something meaningful and worthwhile. Business success as an END in life is a poor thing. Money as an end is empty.

All your work will be superseded. All the homes you sell will be sold again (or torn down). Your office (or cubicle) will be filled by others. You will be replaced and forgotten by co-workers. But not by your spouse and kids (and grandkids).

So, work hard. Be focused. Have a furious purpose. But make sure it is in service to something actually worthwhile or at the end of it all you will find yourself looking around for the satisfaction and meaning you thought you would find there and discover that you are standing all alone with a pile of cash in a big home with a shiny car - and not much else.

motivational over practial

There is beauty in simplicity; in nature, art, business, science and everything in between.
Simplicity recognizes the important thing while ignoring the trivial things. Simplicity makes you more efficient and more effective simultaneously.

The One Thing by Gary Keller is a quick overview of simplicity. Keller is the founder of one of the largest real estate companies in the world and the author of several successful books. Keller draws on his profitable experience and shares his simple secret to success.

The One Thing has an inspiring message, but as a whole the book feels like a long speech by a motivational speaker. The book lacks interesting anecdotes that could really bolster Keller's message. The pages contain curious graphs however none are based on any real numbers just ideas. And it gets a little annoying that the author has pre-underlined parts of the book, that doesn't really give me the opportunity to have the book speak to me.

Keller has a good message: focus on the one thing and everything else falls into place. I am not sure if a whole book was necessary, but the message can definitely perk you up. It's sort of like soda, it tastes really sweet, it gets you caffeinated and pumped up but the feeling doesn't last long because there was no real nutrition to sustain you.

Life is too short to chase unicorns....learn to FOCUS!

This week Gary and co-author Jay Papasan publishes their next book -- The ONE Thing. I had an opportunity to read an advance copy and there is no doubt that this book will surge to the top New York Times best seller list this month!

In an information overload and multi-tasking world their message is clear and single-minded. You have to FOCUS on ONE thing. Extraordinary results are directly determined by how narrow you can make your focus. Of course for most of us that is really hard to do. Distractions and popular philosophies are often the reasons why we think we can't or didn't succeed.

Well, early in this book the authors challenge six widely popular beliefs and confront them as lies.

1. Everything Matters Equally
2. Multitasking is Good
3. Success Requires a Disciplined Life
4. Willpower is Always on Will-Call
5. A Balanced Life is Required
6. Big is Bad

They thoroughly discuss each point, although I am sure one could write a book about each of these topics. But that's not what this book is about. This is about ONE thing, and that's FOCUS. Being successful, according to the authors, requires less discipline than you think. It's about doing the right thing, not about doing everything right. So if you wish to thrive, prosper and flourish...decide what things you're not going to do!

Bottom line... this is a self-help book and I have read hundreds of self-help books, even written some. I can vouch that it's always way harder to create, write and compile your many thoughts into a string of words that deliver a powerful message. Gary and Jay have done a great job! The book is an easy read with good structure, commonsense illustrations and a singularity of message. I would most certainly recommend reading the book. It will definitely challenge you to recalibrate some things in your life.

In closing, and on a lighter side, here are three of my favorite sayings from the book:

Excellent EM primer

I actually had the opportunity to receive instruction from Prof. Bozzola in both Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and acquired the book for those reasons. It is not common to find even a textbook with such well-detailed instructions from beginning level to advanced for a myriad of topics in the field. Of course, there is a very significant focus on biological applications, so some portions of the book are not entirely relevant to materials science folks like myself. This book covers the basics of optics, sample preparation, imaging, photography and film developing, and specifics about both TEMs and SEMs. This book is a very good investment for anyone intending to perform work with such instruments.

This is a great book for those entering the field of EM study. It takes you step by step through both SEM and TEM sample prep and analysis. It is packed with helpful pictures and diagrams. It will be a book you will refer to for methodology and protocal from fixation to sectioning...I really love this book.

Good Supplement - Possible Recommendation

I teach AP CSA and have looked at all of the most current AP prep books in hopes to finding a quality one for all of my students to use and recommend to buy. I just received my book today and spent the past hour scanning it. First, when I received the package and opened the book, the first 15 pages had their corner folded, which is not acceptable when shipping a brand new book. The topics are laid out well with thorough explanations of concepts, but not necessarily all of the detail required. Each topic has basic and advanced questions. Advanced are definitely worthy of AP-like questions and the basics; some are, some aren't, but the basics can be a great way of leading in to the advanced. The practice exams at the back look great as well and I appreciate the free response practice items throughout - this is an area this book thrives over others.

In short - if I am going to recommend a book for students...
Explanations - Barron's 7th edition - sometimes a little more confusing, but has more detail or 5 Steps to a 5 - easier to read, but you will miss some key minor details.
Multiple Choice - Barron's - there are more, harder, and detailed explanations for each section.
Free Response - 5 Steps to a 5 - they have a lot of early ones to ease students into it and explain very nicely results for an "open-ended" type answer.

Overall, I would rate this book a 4 out of 5. I would love more than a handful of multiple choice questions per topic. I also do not appreciate having pages bent before I even open it.

An excellent resource

The authors really have tried to include everything that could help a modern student prepare for the AP exam for Computer Science A. My teen will be studying independently for the exam after taking a year long course and the tools included in the book are extremely helpful.

First of all, the book recommend that you use McGraw Hill's test planning app to customize your study schedule. The app gives you a day by day schedule and also extra practice questions.

To figure out where you stand, you take a diagnostic exam that is half the length of the actual exam. This allows the student to figure out areas of weakness which they can focus on in their preparation for exam day.

Another thing my teen likes about the book is that there are two levels of questions for each subject area - basic and advanced. Books that are filled with only advanced questions can be intimidating and this book does manage to make the topics seem quite accessible.

Beyond that the book has all the standard topics - structure of the exam, each topic explained, test taking strategies, explanations for multiple choice as well as free response problems, Java code Solutions, 3 practice tests and errors to avoid.

All in all, this a well planned an thorough guide written with today's student in mind.

Lots of great information

First, let me say that this is for my son, as he is the one taking the AP course and I thought this book will be helpful. We've only had it a week but so far he is enjoying it... or 'enjoying' it as much as a kid enjoys during doing work during summer break! Since he won't be taking the actual exam for quite a while, I can't yet say if it helps his scores on the AP but I do believe that if he does all the book has in it, he'll definitely fare much better than without it!
It has 3 practice exams as well as a free app to customize his study schedule. This is incredibly useful, as my son easily gets off track so every little organizational idea or app truly helps!
Inside the book it is broken into many 'steps'. Step 1 is to set up the study program as well as what you need to know, and frequently asked questions about the exam. Step 2 is to determine your test readiness and encourages doing the diagnostic exam. Step 3 is all about strategies for success and step 4 is to review the knowledge you need to score high, going into various concepts as what is java, software developer, OOP, Choosing your IDE, and others. Here the book really dives into the information and covers many concepts and breaks down the chapters in the framework of these concepts. Finally, step 5 is titled Building your Test-Taking Confidence.

Also incredibly handy and useful is the appendix. It is filled with goodies, such as a quick reference guide and list of keywords in Java as well as other aspects in addition to an area that lists other online resources.

Both my son and I are excited to utilize this book and I do hope it is truly helpful for him! It looks like a good, well-organized book that will help keep him on track and aid in a successful year and exam!
