The Return: Fathers, Sons and the Land in Between, by Hisham Matar

From the author of In the Country of Men, a Man Booker Prize and National Book Critics Circle Award finalist, comes a beautifully written, uplifting memoir of his journey home to his native Libya in search of the truth behind his father’s disappearance.

NAMED ONE OF THE TEN BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY THE WASHINGTON POST

When Hisham Matar was a nineteen-year-old university student in England, his father was kidnapped. One of the Qaddafi regime’s most prominent opponents in exile, he was held in a secret prison in Libya. Hisham would never see him again. But he never gave up hope that his father might still be alive. “Hope,” as he writes, “is cunning and persistent.”

Twenty-two years later, after the fall of Qaddafi, the prison cells are empty and there is no sign of Jaballa Matar. Hisham returns with his mother and wife to the homeland he never thought he’d go back to again. The Return is the story of what he found there. It is at once an exquisite meditation on history, politics, and art, a brilliant portrait of a nation and a people on the cusp of change, and a disquieting depiction of the brutal legacy of absolute power. Above all, it is a universal tale of loss and love and of one family’s life. Hisham Matar asks the harrowing question: How does one go on living in the face of a loved one’s uncertain fate?

Praise for The Return

“[Matar] writes with both a novelist’s eye for physical and emotional detail, and a reporter’s tactile sense of place and time. The prose is precise, economical, chiseled; the narrative elliptical, almost musical. . . . The Return is, at once, a suspenseful detective story about a writer investigating his father’s fate at the hands of a brutal dictatorship, and a son’s efforts to come to terms with his father’s ghost, who has haunted more than half his life by his absence.”—Michiko Kakutani, The New York Times

“It seems unfair to call Hisham Matar’s extraordinary new book a memoir, since it is so many other things besides: a reflection on exile and the consolations of art, an analysis of authoritarianism, a family history, a portrait of a country in the throes of a revolution, and an impassioned work of mourning. . . . For all its terrible human drama . . . the most impressive thing about The Return is that it also tells a common story, the story of sons everywhere who have lost their fathers, as all sons eventually must.”—Robyn Creswell, The New York Times Book Review

“A moving, unflinching memoir of a family torn apart by the savage realities of today’s Middle East. The crushing of hopes raised by the Arab spring—at both the personal and national levels—is conveyed all the more powerfully because Matar’s anger remains controlled, his belief in humanity undimmed.”—Kazuo Ishiguro, “The Best Summer Books,” The Guardian

“Few trips could be as emotionally freighted as the one taken by Libyan-raised novelist Hisham Matar in his thriller-like memoir . . . about the post-Qaddafi search for his dissident father—and his own deeply ambivalent sense of homecoming.”—Vogue

“A triumph of art over tyranny, structurally thrilling, intensely moving, The Return is a treasure for the ages.”—Peter Carey

“The Return is tremendously powerful. Although it filled me with rage again and again, I never lost sight of Matar’s beautiful intelligence as he tried to get to the heart of the mystery. I am so very grateful he has written this book.”—Nadeem Aslam

“[The Return] roves back and forth in time with a freedom that conceals the intricate precision of its art. One of the greatest achievements of this outstanding book is a narrative design that keeps us hungry for new information even when we suspect exactly what has happened. . . . Mr. Matar is not a wonderful writer because his father disappeared or because his homeland is a mess: He is a brilliant narrative architect and prose stylist, his pared-down approach and measured pace a striking complement to the emotional tumult of his material.”—The Wall Street Journal

“One comes away from this beautiful book feeling a sense of loss for the Libya that Matar and his father, brother, mother, uncles and cousins all fought for or dreamed of. . . . The effect of the family’s attachments is less sentimental than defiant. And although the author does not want to give Libya anything more, he has, in this profound work of witnessing and grief, given it something indeed: a testimony that, even if shaped by the brutal state, has not ultimately been erased by it. The Return, for all the questions it cannot answer, leaves a deep emotional imprint.”—Newsday

“He writes eloquent and precise prose, and his deep inquiry into his father’s imprisonment and absence, and the conflicting details about his death, blend with consideration of Libya’s politics and history, to create a deeply resonant memoir.”—National Book Review

“A masterful memoir, a searing meditation on loss, exile, grief, guilt, belonging, and above all, family. It is, as well, a study of the shaping—and breaking—of the bonds between fathers and sons. . . . This is writing of the highest quality.”—Sunday Times (London)

“At times almost unbearably moving . . . Hisham Matar is an observer and listener of enormous subtlety and sensitivity, and he writes English prose as cleanly and clearly as it can be written. This is a story of terrible deeds, but also a tale of mighty love, loyalty and courage. It simply must be read.”—The Spectator

“A truly remarkable book. From the raw materials of his anger, his suffering, and his guilt, Matar has built a testament to his father, his family and his country. . . . It is a book with a profound faith in the consolations of storytelling. . . . The Return is an act of defiant remembering”—Daily Telegraph (UK)

“[A] magnificent book . . . Deeply affecting.”—The Times (UK)

“Out of his protracted torment Matar has forged a memoir that in its nuance and nobility bears unforgettable witness to love, to courage and to humanity. The Return is also a subtle and nimble work of art. It shifts elegantly between past and present, between dialogue and soliloquy, between urgent, even suspenseful action, and probing meditations on exile, grief and loss.”—Financial Times (UK)

“Mr. Matar’s questions, however, go well beyond politics. This beautifully written memoir deals with the nature of family, the emotions of exile and the ties that link the present with the past—in particular the son with his father, Jaballa Matar.”—The Economist

“[Matar] reveals a suspense novelist’s seasoned instincts . . . A beautifully written, harrowing story of a son’s search for his father and how the impact of inexplicable loss can be unrelenting while the strength of family and cultural ties can ultimately sustain.”—Kirkus (Starred Review)

“A magnificent memoir of exile and loss. Hisham Matar writes Libya’s contemporary history with a Proustian sensibility and the intellect of Al-Jahiz. A timeless read.”—Rawi Hage

“The Return is a personal memoir, concerned with the kidnap and disappearance of the writer’s father at the hands of the Qaddafi regime. It is wise and agonizing and thrilling to read.”—Zadie Smith

“What a brilliant book. Hisham Matar has the quality all historians—of the world and the self—most need: He knows how to stand back and let the past speak. In chronicling his quest for his father, his manner is fastidious, even detached, but his anger is raw and unreconciled; through his narrative art he bodies out the shape of loss and gives a universality to his very particular experience of desolation. The Return reads as easily as a thriller, but is a story that will stick: A person is lost, but gravity and resonance remain.”—Hilary Mantel

“The Return is a riveting book about love and hope, but it is also a moving meditation on grief and loss. It draws a memorable portrait of a family in exile and manages also to explore the politics of Libya with subtlety and steely intelligence. It is a quest for the truth in a dark time, constructed with a novelist's skill, written in tones that are both precise and passionate. It is likely to become a classic.”—Colm Tóibín

Early morning, March 2012. My mother, my wife Diana and I were sitting in a row of seats that were bolted to the tiled floor of a lounge in Cairo International Airport. Flight 835 for Benghazi, a voice announced, was due to depart on time. Every now and then, my mother glanced anxiously at me. Diana, too, seemed concerned. She placed a hand on my arm and smiled. I should get up and walk around, I told myself. But my body remained rigid. I had never felt more capable of stillness.

The terminal was nearly empty. There was only one man sitting opposite us. He was overweight, weary-looking, possibly in his mid-fifties. There was something in the way he sat—the locked hands on the lap, the left tilt of the torso—that signaled resignation. Was he Egyptian or Libyan? Was he on a visit to the neighboring country or going home after the revolution? Had he been for or against Qaddafi? Perhaps he was one of those undecided ones who held their reservations close to their chest?

The voice of the announcer returned. It was time to board. I found myself standing at the front of the queue, Diana beside me. She had, on more than one occasion, taken me to the town where she was born, in northern California. I know the plants and the color of the light and the distances where she grew up. Now I was, finally, taking her to my land. She had packed the Hasselblad and the Leica, her two favorite cameras, and a hundred rolls of film. Diana works with great fidelity. Once she gets hold of a thread, she will follow it until the end. Knowing this excited and worried me. I am reluctant to give Libya any more than it has already taken.

Mother was pacing by the windows that looked onto the runway, speaking on her mobile phone. People—mostly men—began to fill the terminal. Diana and I were now standing at the head of a long queue. It bent behind us like a river. I pretended I had forgotten something and pulled her to one side. Returning after all these years was a bad idea, I suddenly thought. My family had left in 1979, thirty-three years earlier. This was the chasm that divided the man from the eight-year-old boy I was then. The plane was going to cross that gulf. Surely such journeys were reckless. This one could rob me of a skill that I have worked hard to cultivate: how to live away from places and people I love. Joseph Brodsky was right. So were Nabokov and Conrad. They were artists who never returned. Each had tried, in his own way, to cure himself of his country. What you have left behind has dissolved. Return and you will face the absence or the defacement of what you treasured. But Dmitri Shostakovich and Boris Pasternak and Naguib Mahfouz were also right: never leave the homeland. Leave and your connections to the source will be severed. You will be like a dead trunk, hard and hollow.

What do you do when you cannot leave and cannot return?

***

Back in October 2011, I had considered never returning to Libya. I was in New York, walking up Broadway, the air cold and swift, when the proposition presented itself. It seemed immaculate, a thought my mind had manufactured independently. As in youthful moments of drunkenness, I felt bold and invincible.

I had gone to New York the previous month, at the invitation of Barnard College, to lecture on novels about exile and estrangement. But I had an older connection to the city. My parents had moved to Manhattan in the spring of 1970, when my father was appointed first secretary in the Libyan Mission to the United Nations. I was born that autumn. Three years later, in 1973, we returned to Tripoli. In the years since, I had visited New York maybe four or five times and always briefly. So, although I had just returned to the city of my birth, it was a place I hardly knew.

In the thirty-six years since we left Libya, my family and I had built associations with several surrogate cities: Nairobi, where we went on our escape from Libya, in 1979, and have continued to visit ever since; Cairo, where we settled the following year into indefinite exile; Rome, a vacation spot for us; London, where I went at the age of fifteen for my studies and where for twenty-nine years I have been doggedly trying to make a life for myself; Paris, where, fatigued and annoyed by London, I moved in my early thirties, vowing never to return to England, only to find myself back two years later. In all these cities, I had pictured myself one day calm and living in that faraway island, Manhattan, where I was born. I would imagine a new acquaintance asking me, perhaps at a dinner party, or in a café, or in changing-rooms after a long swim, that old tiresome question “Where are you from?” and I, unfazed and free of the usual agitation, would casually reply, “New York.” In these fantasies, I saw myself taking pleasure from the fact that such a statement would be both true and false, like a magic trick.

That I should move to Manhattan in my fortieth year, as Libya was ripping itself apart, and for this to take place on the 1st of September, the day when, back in 1969, a young captain named Muammar Qaddafi deposed King Idris and many of the significant features of my life—where I live, the language in which I write, the language I am using now to write this—were set in motion: all this made it difficult to escape the idea that there was some kind of divine will at work.

In any political history of Libya, the 1980s represent a particularly lurid chapter. Opponents of the regime were hanged in public squares and sports arenas. Dissidents who fled the country were pursued—some kidnapped or assassinated. The ’80s were also the first time that Libya had an armed and determined resistance to the dictatorship. My father was one of the opposition’s most prominent figures. The organization he belonged to had a training camp in Chad, south of the Libyan border, and several underground cells inside the country. Father’s career in the army, his short tenure as a diplomat, and the private means he had managed to procure in the mid-1970s, when he became a successful businessman—importing products as diverse as Mitsubishi vehicles and Converse sports shoes to the Middle East—made him a dangerous enemy. The dictatorship had tried to buy him off; it had tried to scare him. I remember sitting beside him one afternoon in our flat in Cairo when I was ten or eleven, the weight of his arm on my shoulders. In the chair opposite sat one of the men I called “Uncle”—men who, I somehow knew, were his allies or followers. The word “compromise” was spoken, and Father responded, “I won’t negotiate. Not with criminals.”

Whenever we were in Europe, he carried a gun. Before getting into the car, he would ask us to stand well away. He would go down on his knees and look under the chassis, cup his hands and peek through the windows for any sign of wiring. Men like him had been shot in train stations and cafés, their cars blown up. During the 1980s, when I was still in Cairo, I had read in the newspaper about the death of a renowned Libyan economist. He was stepping off a train at Stazione Termini in Rome when a stranger pressed a pistol to his chest and pulled the trigger. The photograph printed beside the article had the figure of the deceased covered in newspaper sheets, presumably from that day’s paper, which stopped at his ankles, leaving his polished leather shoes pointing up. Another time there was a report of a Libyan student shot in Greece. He was sitting on the terrace of a café in Monastiraki Square in Athens. A scooter stopped and the man sitting behind the driver pointed a gun at the student and fired several shots. A Libyan BBC World Service newsreader was killed in London. In April 1984 a demonstration took place in front of the Libyan Embassy in St. James’s Square. One of the embassy staff pulled up a sash window on the first floor, held out a machine gun, and sprayed the crowd. A policewoman, Yvonne Fletcher, was killed and eleven Libyan demonstrators were wounded, some of them critically.

Qaddafi’s campaign to hunt down exiled critics—which was announced by Moussa Koussa, the head of foreign intelligence, at a public rally in the early 1980s—extended to the families of dissidents. My only sibling, Ziad, was fifteen when he went off to boarding school in Switzerland. A few weeks later, mid-way through term, he returned to Cairo. We had all gone to collect him from the airport. When he appeared amongst those spilling out of the arrivals lounge, his face looked paler than I remembered it. A few days earlier, I had seen Mother make several telephone calls, her finger trembling as she spun the dial.

The Swiss school was remote, high up in the Alps. Public transport to the nearest village was in the form of a cable car, which operated for only a few hours in the middle of the day. For two days running, Ziad noticed a car parked on the path outside the school’s main gate. It had in it four men. They had the long hair so typical of members of Qaddafi’s Revolutionary Committees. Late one night, Ziad was called to the school’s office telephone. On the other end of the line, a man said, “I am a friend of your father. You must do exactly what I tell you. You have to leave immediately and take the first train to Basle.”

“Why? What happened?” Ziad asked.

“I can’t tell you now. You must hurry. Take the first train to Basle. I’ll be there and will explain everything.”

“But it’s the middle of the night,” Ziad said.

The man would not offer any further explanations. He simply kept repeating, “Take the first train to Basle.”

“I can’t do that. I don’t know who you are. Please don’t call here again,” Ziad said, and hung up.

The man then called Mother, who then telephoned the school. She told Ziad he needed to leave the school right away and told him what to do.

Ziad woke up his favorite teacher, a young Cambridge graduate who had probably thought it would be fun to go and teach English literature in the Alps, skiing between classes.

“Sir, my father is about to have surgery and asked to see me before going into the operating theater. I need to take the first train to Basle. Would you please drive me to the station?”

The teacher telephoned my mother, and she backed up Ziad’s story. The headmaster had to be woken up. He telephoned Mother and, once he too was satisfied, Ziad’s teacher checked the train timetable. There was a train for Basle in forty minutes. If they hurried, they might make it.

They had to drive past the car; there was no other way out. Ziad pretended to be tying his shoelace as they passed the men. The teacher drove carefully down the twisting mountain road. A few minutes later, headlights appeared behind them. When the teacher said, “I think they are following us,” Ziad pretended not to hear.

At the station, Ziad shot into the concourse and hid in the public toilets. He heard the train roll in. He waited until it had come to a complete stop, counted a few seconds for the passengers to disembark and board, then ran and jumped on the train. The doors shut and the carriages moved. Ziad was sure he had lost them, but then the four men appeared, walking up the aisle. They saw him. One of them smiled at him. They followed him from one carriage to the next, muttering, “Kid, you think you are a man? Then come here and show us.” At the front of the train, Ziad found the conductor chatting to the driver.

Very Good Book....Well-Told
By R. R. Costas Jr.
I decided to buy this book based on an NPR radio interview with the author that I heard soon after the book's release. He had such a wonderful speaking voice and delivery that it made me want to buy the book thinking and hoping that his prose would be as beautiful. It is.

In addition, having lost my own father when I was barely 21 (although in much less complicated conditions than the author's), any story about fathers and sons always will catch my interest.

In the end I couldn't give this a 5-star rating. Something was missing and I couldn't quite put my finger on it. Perhaps it is that, while I can relate to the issue of a lost father and memories, I am not muslim or from the African continent...nor am I a political exile. Therefore, I couldn't relate completely to the author's pain and resolve.

What I did get was a good education on Libya, of which I know only what I've seen in the news for the past 30 years. I learned more than I knew about Qaddafi's brutality and of the life of exiles throughout the continent and Europe. The prose is very nice and easy to read....sometimes too easy. I found myself going back to re-read some passages because I had a feeling I might have missed something beautiful or revealing. That was the case more often than I am proud to admit. The author was very successful in putting the reader---at least me---in a situation in which I pictured my father, my family and me in the same situation. It wasn't a pleasant feeling, but it wasn't meant to be. Many of us are very lucky just because we were born in a free country. This book will make you think of how lucky those people are indeed and just how un-lucky many others are.

Overall, I recommend this book as a pleasant, informative, powerful and educational read that will make the reader reflect. It doesn't resolve as clearly as I had hoped, but it is not hard to suppose what happened after the book's end.

By phyllis
I loved this book for its integrity and its understanding of Libya and the politics surrounding this country. I did not like it for how impersonal and cold it sometimes felt. Matar is intense. His singular obsession to find out what happened to his father is understandable. To have a father who clearly loved his country above all else is tough to take--and yet, his father is so admirable, and so weren't many others, who had to suffer because Quadafi was a lunatic. There was so much promise for Libya when Quadafi came into power--but because of the seductive reach of power, all goodness disappeared. One thing is for sure--all those US senators that had to have fifty million reports on the Benghazi incident haven't a clue about Libya.

It won't be easy for Libya in the 21st century/
By GA Knight
I purchased both the book and the audio. I had Hisham on either the BBC or CBC and so wanted to hear the stories in his voice.
The writing was exceptinal and in an unusual sstyle the continually brought me back to what Hiswham was feeling at that point and struck me
withhis determination. I wish all Americans could read and try to understand what his peoples have gone through over the lst century. It won't be
easy for Libya in the 21st century/. The survival of their literature, culture and customs should be encouraged without interference!

The Man Who Planted Trees, by Jean Giono

Twenty years ago Chelsea Green published the first trade edition of The Man Who Planted Trees, a timeless eco-fable about what one person can do to restore the earth. The hero of the story, Elzéard Bouffier, spent his life planting one hundred acorns a day in a desolate, barren section of Provence in the south of France. The result was a total transformation of the landscape-from one devoid of life, with miserable, contentious inhabitants, to one filled with the scent of flowers, the songs of birds, and fresh, flowing water.

Since our first publication, the book has sold over a quarter of a million copies and inspired countless numbers of people around the world to take action and plant trees. On National Arbor Day, April 29, 2005, Chelsea Green released a special twentieth anniversary edition with a new foreword by Wangari Maathai, winner of the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize and founder of the African Green Belt Movement.

Amazon.com Review
The Man Who Planted Trees is not a detailed how-to guide to planting; it is a touching story of Elzéard Bouffier, who devoted his entire life to reforesting a desolate portion of Provence, in southern France. He single-handedly planted 100 acorns each day before, through, and after two world wars, and transformed a sorrowful place into one full of life and joy. Jean Giono's words offer a tribute to how much good one person can accomplish in a lifetime and advise on how to live life with deep meaning. Illustrated with moving, beautiful wood engravings by Michael McCurdy, The Man Who Planted Trees is simply written but powerful and unforgettable. The text is also available on tape, eloquently narrated by Robert J. Lurtsema and accompanied by music from the Paul Winter Consort.

Review
"Jean Giono's story of a man's generosity to nature-and through nature, to other humans-surely belongs among the most moving and endearing statements of our hope. The story-vision and parable and manual-correctly opposes the tree-planter, the earth-husband, to the makers of war. In the figure of Elzéard Bouffier, Giono summaries the best that can be said of our species. It has given me much joy to reread this story."-Wendell Berry

Fabulous
By John McAndrew
In many readers' lives there are a few books, or maybe only one, which serve as touchstones. They define us like our most vivid memories do. Not many books or stories deserve that kind of devotion, but this one does. It isn't timeless - it's deeply rooted in 20th century France - but its honest treatment of the time and place is one of the things that makes it universal.

There are dozens of facets that could be highlighted in a review, but the one I find most compelling is Giono's treatment of a man alone and how he is yet connected to the world around him. Even a solitary figure can contribute to the birth and health of a community. It's not clear why he does his work, but it's clear that the work is good.

There is such hope here, but no easy palliative. It is a call to lifelong diligence in the service of something good, and important, and bigger than ourselves.

Will inspire you and your children to care for nature.

The Man Who Planted Trees is the tale of Elzeard Bouffier, a man who, after his son and wife die, spends his life reforesting miles of barren land in southern France. Bouffier's planting of thousands and thousands of trees results in many wondrous things occurring, including water again flowing in brooks that had been dry for many years. The brooks are fed by rains and snows that are conserved by the forest that Bouffier planted. The harsh, barren land is now pleasant and full of life.
Written by Jean Giono, this popular story of inspiration and hope was originally published in 1954 in Vogue as "The Man Who Planted Hope and Grew Happiness." The story's opening paragraph is as follows:
"For a human character to reveal truly exceptional qualities, one must have the good fortune to be able to observe its performance over many years. If this performance is devoid of all egoism, if its guiding motive is unparalleled generosity, if it is absolutely certain that there is no thought of recompense and that, in addition, it has left its visible mark upon the earth, then there can be no mistake."
The Man Who Planted Trees has left a "visible mark upon the earth" having been translated into several languages. In the "Afterword" of the Chelsea Green Publishing Company's edition, Norma L. Goodrich wrote that Giono donated his story. According to Goodrich, "Giono believed he left his mark on earth when he wrote Elzeard Bouffier's story because he gave it away for the good of others, heedless of payment: `It was one of my stories of which I am the proudest. It does not bring me in one single penny and that is why it has accomplished what it was written for.'"
This special edition is very informative. Not only does it contain Giono's inspirational story, which is complemented beautifully by Michael McCurdy's wood engraving illustrations and Goodrich's informative "Afterword" about Giono, but it also contains considerable information about how wood and paper can be conserved in the section "The WoodWise Consumer." Goodrich writes about Giono's effort to have people respect trees.
"Giono later wrote an American admirer of the tale that his purpose in creating Bouffier `was to make people love the tree, or more precisely, to make them love planting trees.' Within a few years the story of Elzeard Bouffier swept around the world and was translated into at least a dozen languages. It has long since inspired reforestation efforts, worldwide."
The Man Who Planted Trees is not only a wonderful story, it will inspire you and your children to care for the natural world.

The Ultimate Book on Stock Market Timing Volume 4: Solar/Lunar Correlations to Short-Term Trading Cycles, by Raymond A. Merriman

Volume 4 of this 5-volume series on The Ultimate Book on Stock Market Timing is the most comprehensive analysis yet of all the Sun-Moon combinations and their correspondence to price movements in stock indices available today. It examines 60 years of daily data on the Dow Jones Industrial Averages, and the past 16-18 years of daily data on the NASDAQ Composite and Japanese Nikkei stock indices. The probability of 4% or greater reversals is assigned to each Sun-Moon combination, which are usually in effect 1-2 (sometimes 3) trading days per year. In all, there are approximately 30 of these 1-2 day periods that stand out as high probability trade dates each year, in each index. Thus when a Sun-Moon combination with a high correlation to 4% or greater price swings is in effect, a trader knows that this 1-2 day period offers a high probability for an isolated low or high to form, from which the market will reverse a substantial amount in a very short time. This is the ideal situation for short-term traders: high profit probability with a minimal amount of time exposure (risk) in the market.

This book also identifies which Sun-Moon combinations have a much lower than expected correlation to short-term trading reversals, thereby allowing traders the comfort of not feeling pressured to exit (or enter) on certain dates. In addition, each Sun-Mercury and Sun-Venus sign combinations are examined for high and low probability reversal zones, and used along with Sun-Moon combinations to determine the most and least volatile times for trading stock indices. If you are a short-term trader of stock exchange futures, options, or the stock exchange traded indices on the AMEX, like the DIA, SPY, or QQQ, this is a book that can provide an extremely valuable market timing advantage. This is the "edge" that traders seek.

Spend your money on Merriman by buying something else
By Sam Johnson
This book was an enormous disappointment. First off I like Merriman. I came across him reading his weekly update which is enjoyable and sometimes very informative. Since the service is free I thought I would throw some money his way and I picked this book as the vehicle to do so. I forked over $95 a bit outrageous but not in the context in which I wished to spend it. I'm happy to see that Merriman or someone has reduced the price to 77.61. It needs to go lower and even then I'm not sure I would recommend this book. Here's why. With a title that uses the words Solar Lunar correlations I would be looking for an in depth study of cycles relating to the sun and moon phases. The frequency of a peak or crest at various phases and some kind of statistical relevancy. The behaviour of markets around these points and perhaps some follow up as to whether the time of year mattered. I would also have hoped for some study of the metonic and saros cycles, eclipses etc. That would be the minimum for a book that costs $95. Here's what you get. Merriman looks only at 4% moves and their frequency depending on which sign the sun moon and the planets Venus and Mercury are in. He fine tunes it a little to see if there is greater frequency peaks or crests, but what you get are bunch of tables. Now maybe in it's own right this might be an interesting study if he backed it up with a statistical analysis of the significance. In other words what is th elikelyhood that results are merely random anomalies. Unfortunately the statistics are pretty much useless. Even in the case of the Dow which has the largest dataset you just don't have the amount of data to generate any meaningful answers. And in fact it's not surprising that there are no signiture 1 signals whereas there are some for the Nikkei and the Naz (as the greater amount of data is showing that any corellation is reverting to zero). Let me give you an example say you want to see if the Dow is likely to reverse to today. So you check. The Sun is in Taurus and the Moon is Libra and will be for about 2 1/2 days. Will the market reverse. You look it up. Merriman gives it weighting of 100 meaning the statistical probability of a reversal is equal to a chance reversal based on the total data set. But now look at the amount of times an actual reversal occurred with this Sun Moon combo: 7. Now how many data points for a combo that has a high probability: That would be the Sun in Taurus Moon in Cancer: The number of ocurrences is 11. It seems like a big difference but it's statistically meaningless. That could happen randomly when number of occurences is so low. There are a few interesting observations in the book and a methodolgy for trading but without more rigorous statistics it would be hazardous to trade. And of course for those of us interested in shorter moves the book is a complete waste. Why didn't Merriman look at the the 2 or 3 days around the full moon or new moon? Again there would be limited data sets but maybe they signals would have exceed their random possiblity. Anyone who who can make a strong statistical argument that you can use these numbers should sound out. It's not that I want to criticise Merriman as I think he is well intentioned but I question his approach. While I was happy to spend the money I think others should hold off unless the price is signicantly lowered. You would be better of buying Merriman's software and then finetuning what you're looking for. There's not enough commentary or insight to make it worthwhile. But if you want to see an attempt to apply astrology to swing trades and understand the difficulty in doing so then check it out. Ultimately you get what you pay for in life. I assume Merriman wants you topay for his market timing services which is why he hobbles the parameters for this book. Ultimately I wished I had bought Volume 1 of the series which just focuses on longer cycles without the astrology. In any event I will probably buy it just to give him some more money for his efforts. Be careful though because his newer edition is not the one currently listed for sale on Amazon.

Key Short-Term Trading Reversal Dates Pinpointed by Merriman
By L. Masonson
This book is Merriman's fourth book in a series of comprehensive volumes in the Ultimate Book on Stock Market Timing series:
Volume I. Cycles and Patterns in Indexes
Volume II. Geocosmic Correlations to Investment Cycles
Volume III. Geocosmic Correlations to Trading Cycles
Volume IV. Solar/Lunar Correlations to Short-Term Trading Reversals
Volume V. Technical Tools and Trading Cycles (not yet completed)
As is the case with his previous volumes II and III, the reader unfamiliar with astrology will have difficulty in understanding the book. Many of the astrological terms are neither clearly defined, nor explained as to their importance. Those readers familiar with astrology will have no such problems. Readers unfamiliar with astrology and the financial markets, should first read Merriman's 60-page basic primer "Basic Principles of Geocosmic Studies for Financial Market Timing."
Volume IV is a 241-page paperback (8.5" x 11"). Very few researchers and market analysts have the stamina, knowledge, time, and skill to write one ground-breaking book on the markets. Merriman has accomplished that feat four times over, and he is not done yet, with a fifth volume underway.
As I expected, Merriman has produced exhaustive research on the correlation of geocosmic signatures with high and low points in three equities markets. The book's hypothesis is that short-term traders can take advantage of specific reversal dates during the year that can be identified by using specific solar/lunar combinations. Most researchers who have found statistically valid correlations of data to stock prices that can be used for profitable trading, tend to keep it to themselves, and not share it with the public. Merriman has taken the opposite road and shares his years of research with all of us. Therefore, it is incumbent upon us (short-term traders) to give his findings serious consideration. Any edge that we can get in the markets is something that should be examined and put to the test.
Merriman's reviews 60 years of DJIA price data coupled with all the Sun-Moon combinations. He also reviews similar combinations with almost two decades of data for the Nasdaq composite and the Japanese Nikkei index. He focuses on determining the important reversal dates ( one or three day time bands a few times a year) - 4% or more changes in value -- for specific Sun-Moon combinations. Traders can get ready to act on these reversal points with minimal risk. Traders who use the QQQs, SPYs, and DIAs, as well as futures and options can benefit from Merriman's identification of these timeframes.
Merriman found that certain lunar cycles and certain Sun-Moon signs correlate consistently with tradable highs and lows in the financial markets, and identifies them. At the end of the book, Merriman has a chapter devoted to a short-term trading methodology that clearly spells out the 16 steps required to take advantage of the key reversal dates. He covers a few intraday technical indicators with his 16-step methodology, and then shows a detailed example.
In summary, this book is another significant contribution in the area of timing the market -with specific emphasis on using solar/lunar correlations to identify high probability key reversal dates. For those readers with a solid understanding of these subject areas, the usefulness of this book is apparent. For other readers who feel that the material presented is useful, but cannot fully understand it to use it, then consider Merriman's other services that include newsletters, seminars, software, annual forecasts and reports ... In conclusion, Merriman continues to add significant value to short-term trader's ability to profit from identifiable and profitable market situations. Those who take the time to study his work will find a new tool to use.

Freefoot was the sixth chief of the elves of ElfQuest. He and his people lived in a time of peace, when there were no humans, no trolls, and only a few other distant relations. Five of these stories were published in the Blood of Ten Chiefs anthologies. The sixth, "Howling Time," is published here for the first time. The stories are about everyday events: coming of age, dangerous animals, flood and death, survival and sacrifice. They are about who the elves are, and about their world of Two Moons.

Review
"It is hard to find a textbook that gives a better basis for the understanding of Human metabolism and nutrition, that is so well designed and actually quite fun to read as this one. This book is my first choice for a textbook for my medical students and for nursing school too. It is well suited for any kind of studies of metabolism at a higher level because of its ease at explaining the basics and the frameworks needed for the understanding of metabolism. It is the first book I give to my doctorial students when they need to freshen up their knowledge and the basics in metabolism when starting research in clinical nutrition and metabolism...if anyone is looking for the most interesting and fun book to read as an in depth introduction to human metabolism and nutrition, this is it!" Very sleek presentation of topic area; accessible for non-specialist
By J. Douglas Tygar
I can warmly recommend this book as a highly accessible textbook on some of the most interesting topics in biochemistry. The book is largely self-contained, and thus is surprisingly accessible to a wide variety of readers, even those with very limited exposure to biochemistry.

Since Prof. Frayn keeps his focus keenly on human examples, the entirety of the book is relevant to readers. Frayn's book is relatively brief (for a science textbook), and thus does not have the encyclopedic feel of a typical undergraduate biochemistry textbook. What a non-specialist reader does get from this book is a solid understanding of metabolic processes and tremendous insight into his or her own body.

I would like to call out several features of this book that I found especially nice: Prof. Frayn's holistic approach combines topics from anatomy, medicine, biology, biochemistry, and nutrition in a single integrated presentation, allowing the reader to make connections that otherwise might be difficult. As I mentioned previously, the text is largely self-contained (and he has cross-references throughout the book, making it easy to follow), so it can be read by a wide audience (I would recommend that a reader have a basic understanding of chemistry at the high school level before reading this book.) Prof. Frayn also puts much of the material in a variety of tables, diagrams, and boxes, which helps present the material in convenient "chunks."

The relatively short length of the book (the text is about 350 pages, with the references, index, and front material making up the balance of the page count) allows the author to concentrate his attention on the "good stuff" (particularly interesting topics in metabolic studies) and still keep the pace of the book flowing. Finally, Prof. Frayn is an excellent writer, and his prose is fun to read, without being cloying.

I can recommend this book to the lay person who is prepared to make an effort to follow a textbook-level presentation of this material.

Fantastic resource and very readable

This book makes nutritional biochemistry as readable as a novel; I love the way this author makes technical details come alive. This book also makes a great gift for persons interested in metabolism.

Excellent
By imre veres
I have probably more than 60 textbooks on Advanced Nutrition, Sports Nutrition and Clinical Nutrition, published in last 5 years, from s.Gropper through Krauses to A. Catharine Ross... But in this book found some details what is in no other. For nutritionist(or in USA maybe dietetian), high level fitness experts, and nonspeciallist doctors I recommend it highly. Book is readable, but also filled with some interesting data, diagrams, tables and explanation. This book is of course not for someone who has not good knowledge about nutrition, but very useful addition to that subject for understanding it deeper. Really sorry that Mr Frayn not have writen another book, like his presentation style so much.
