For anyone deciding b/w this and Fodor's I'd 100% recommend this Lonely Planet guide. It's restaurant rec's were good, and got a little more into the thick of things than Fodor's. If you're a resort traveler, Fodor's may be for you, but if you plan to be a little more rugged in your adventures, then definitely get lonely planet. So happy I ordered this one at the last minute. Wound up throwing Fodor's away while we were in PR.

no table of contents in kindle edition

While the content is helpful and recent, the inability to navigate in any useful way renders the kindle edition almost useless. There is no table of contents or chapters so you must search or randomly advance to find content.
The paper edition, which I bought after discovering this, is much more useful as a result.

A good guide for the island

A good guide for the island. It has great suggestions, but it would be more comprehensive. It missed a lot of the hotels and restaurants we encountered and lacks the good tips we got from friends. Everyone on the island is incredibly hospitable and friendly.

If going: October is the cheapest, but there will be rain. Bring umbrella, sunscreen, bug repellent, swim trunks/suit, anti-itch cream. October also has cheap airfare if flying from east coast. I wouldn't pay more than $350 for round trip.

Remember, it is basically just like another state in the US (Walmart, Petsmart, Walgreens, etc) -- except with better (sea)food and more Spanish, though everyone speaks English. If renting a car, everyone drives maniacally (no one uses turn signals, everyone speeds, and tail gating is a norm) - there is no parking in Old San Juan, so rent a car after leaving that town. Cab to and from air port runs about $25-30.

Sales tax is 11.5% on the island. (Maybe in an effort to help alleviate the island's ~$72 billion debt.)

It would be great to have a shoestring version of this book!

About the Author
Howard Frumkin, MD, DrPH, is Dean of the School of Public Health and Professor of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences at the University of Washington. He previously served as director of the National Center for Environmental Health/Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), where he established programs in climate change and in the built environment. He also served as Special Assistant to the CDC Director for climate change and health.
Dr. Frumkin received an MD from the University of Pennsylvania, an MPH and a DrPH from Harvard University, and further internal and occupational medicine training from the University of Pennsylvania, Cambridge Hospital, and Harvard University.
He has co-authored two Island Press Books: Urban Sprawl and Public Health and most recently Making Healthy Places: Designing And Building For Health, Well-Being, And Sustainability with Andrew Dannenberg and Richard J. Jackson. His other books include Environmental Health: From Global to Local and Safe and Healthy School Environments.
He is also the author or co-author of over 180 scientific journal articles and chapters. He is a fellow of the American College of Physicians, the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, Collegium Ramazzini, and the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland.

Accessible Primer on Patents & Exclusivity in the Pharma Industry

As a consultant in the pharmaceutical/biotech industry, I found this reading to be pleasantly illuminating and gently absorbing (took only 2 leisurely days to read). Although having some exposure to law school pedagogy and lingo myself, Mr. Voet explains the legal underpinnings of patent law with a simplistic and logical exposition interlaced with sufficient detail, precision and nuance (as is expected in any effective discussion on law). He begins his tour from the basic definition of a patent, and guides the reader through important matters like patent claims, interference, "doctrine of equivalents", and some noteworthy legal precedents that guide current interpretations of patent law (for example, how the Merck v. Integra decision provides "safe harbor exemption" for infringements that pertain to preclinical and clinical research pursuant to FDA submission). Not lost in Voet's description is the distinctive legal environments and dynamics in other key pharmaceutical markets like the E.U., Canada and Japan, and those variations are aptly examined. While there is indeed a distinction between patent rights and market exclusivities, Voet describes the interplay between the two in the ever critical task of product life-cycle management. His own pharma industry experience enriches his exposition by revealing industry-specific patterns (like the propensity for innovator companies to file broad drug compound patents and padding with narrow patents on formulation, new indications, etc.), and walking through illustrative examples and case studies (like Syntex's life-cycle strategy on Acular 0.5% against generic threats by the notorious Apotex). Despite the admittedly dynamic nature of patent law and market exclusivities, Voet's material is refreshingly up-to-date (referring to events/considerations as recent as 2007-08). Good and comprehensive overview

This is a fairly well written overview of generic gaming. While intellectual property and regulatory affairs are central themes of this industry, the author keeps the reader interested with relevant illustrations and a light writting style. All aspects of pIVs, litigations, and LCM are covered in a way that is accessible to the neophyte while preserving details and nuances for the pharma professional. As far as I remember, this was the only book available on the topic that I was able to find. However I would recommend it for both its content and conciseness.
Good for students/policy makers researching the topic, portfolio managers at innovator pharmas, job seekers in the generic industry, and the general audience.

About the Author

Hayao Miyazaki is one of Japan's most beloved animation directors. In September 2005 he was awarded the Venice International Film Festival's Golden Lion Award for Lifetime Achievement, and his Studio Ghibli received the Festival's Osella Award for overall achievement in 2004. Beautiful impressions

[[VIDEOID:mo30U1WBPB2MXI1]]Here's the other art book for Nausicaa, the other being The Art of Nausicaa, which is in Japanese and not available to English as it wasn't translated. This one collects all the art created using watercolour for both the manga and film.

About half of the book is on the manga. There aren't any comic panels but you'll see a lot of covers, such as those he did for Animage, a Japanese anime and entertainment magazine. The covers are printed huge, often fullpage. Very beautiful and feels very different from the mainstream manga with the use of watercolour. If you remove the dust jacket, you'll see some of the Animage covers that have been published.

For the film section, there are storyboards, background concept art and character designs. Since I've the other art book as well, I see a bit of duplication of drawings, but printed in different sizes.

There's plenty of accompanying commentary for the art. He talks about everything from his thoughts on drawing covers, which he dislikes, and drawing Nausicaa (character) out of character, which he dislike even more. You'll find a lot of interesting stuff regarding clashes with his artistic vision for the manga and film at that time. At the back is a longer piece of interview which looks at how the idea of making Nausicaa came about.

All the drawings that appear in this book are drawn by Miyazaki, dating way back to 1982. It's amazing to see how far Miyazaki has come.

Nausicaa and Miyazaki fans will find this book to be a nice collectible.

Impressions, indeed!

I ordered this more out of curiosity than anything else, expecting a fairly slim volume on a par with the Nausicaa comics: instead, it comes in as a pretty hefty tome, with many of Miyazaki's covers and "thinking out loud on paper" moments. His commentary (mainly captions to each image) is humble and reveals an intriguing glimpse into the mind of one of Japan's most famous and prolific Anime directors. I mean seriously, you'd never read a Pixar or Disney director apologies about "I didn't want to do a magazine cover, but the art director was insistent", or even revealing his intent to use Oni as main characters early in preproduction (yeah, those never made it to the final film).

A rare and interesting look into Miyazaki's Nausicaa

This book is excellent. It combines great concept art, poster art and background info on the Nausicaa movie and manga by Hayao Miyazaki. The attention to detail and research undertaken to create Nausicaa and the world she inhabits is breath taking. The progression of basic ideas (wanting to do a Japanese period drama anime of 'Beauty and the Beast') to final concept (creating 'Nausicaa' as we see her today) was especially interesting to me. This book is a high-quality coffee-table book. The only downside is that many of Miyazaki's comments on his work are especially self-deprecating. Cheer up mate! Highly recommended. 10/10

I don't know if the other Art of Nausicaa book found at Amazon is similar or the same. Can anyone help there?

Five Stars for Five Star Church!

I read this book a few years ago and it has changed my life. I use this as the cornerstone of my non-profit work. I have used the concepts and outlines to help other churches. Dr. Toler wishes to bring all churches to their full potential. Buy this for your pastor, your church board, for business people you care about. Five Star Church is a movement for quality and excellence!

AME CHURCH, BUY THIS BOOK!

My Pastor advised our congregation, of an AME Church to all purchase and read this book, it was great advice! He was newly assigned to our church and came with lots of changes that needless to say was met with lots of opposition and drama. This book put into perspective what he is trying to do with bringing our church out of traditions that no longer work, with respect to focusing on our main objective...WINNING AS MANY SOULS TO CHRIST AS WE CAN, and meeting our spiritual needs...AMEN!! This book is not just for making your church a five star experience, but you can also apply it's principles to your workplace, developing your own business, even changes within yourself. This book is a must buy if your church is starting lose members or if your church just isn't growing.

A great guide for improving the quality of your church!

Stan Toler and Alan Nelson give wonderful and specific helps to turn any church into a 5-Star Quality Service Church. The evaluation questions at the end of each chapter are wonderful to help church leadership evaluate where they stand in serving God's people. Toler & Nelson offer important insights to FAQ's that will prove helpful to any church. An excellent resource to make every church excellent!
