Unique and extremely hot!

Unique novel with a touch of Game of Thrones. The story is beautifully narrated and we get to know the perspectives of some of the different characters. I really enjoyed getting to know and to understand them better after finding about their personal lives and what lead them to the actual circumstances. The sex scenes are really hot and even if, sometimes, I don't agree with some of the acts, they are reasonable under those circumstances and in that society.

I really loved how the author describes the places where the story takes place and the two cultures and societies involved. For some hours she brought me back to the Game of Thrones books, but with romance and erotic scenes ;-)

The only thing I didn't appreciate was the cliffhanger. Lately it seems that most of novels I am reading have a cliffhanger and it is difficult to keep up with all the publication dates and all the books coming up. It's very time consuming and frustrating for the readers and I'm positive that more than one series I really enjoyed I'll miss checking if a new instalment was published and, consequently, totally forget about it. However, I hope Ms. Wolfe publishes a new book soon so I don't forget her because I cannot wait for her next book!!

A Fantasy Tale worth the Telling

In this alternate world, the dwellers of Arcadia are protected from the Dark beings by the Wildlanders, a fiercely honorable race that lives outside the walls of Arcadia. The women of Arcadia are kept "pure" by preventing them from enjoying pleasures. The women must be thin, blond and prim to be considered good wife material. There is a long standing agreement between their Commissioner and the elders of the Wildlanders that the latter will protect the city dwellers in exchange for their unwanted women. Ava is not of the desired norm and has always felt different, but one day at the market she meets one of the Wildlanders and not long afterwards she finds herself being a tribute bride not just to that very warrior, but to his three classmates as well.
Ava has a hard time adjusting to their ways, but I have to say, the way the Wildlander's world is described I would pick it over Arcadia any day. They play hard and are fiercely loyal to their clan and family. I came away realising that they had far more admirable traits than the city dwellers.
The story contains explicit sex with Ava and her four mates as well as some m/m between two of her mates. A theme throughout is doing the right thing for the good of the whole and the value of honor.
While the Wildlanders certainly have fierce warriors, they are ruled by the elder women, unlike the city dwellers that place little value on women in general.

About the Author
Bob Sweet has more than 30 years of experience in the technology and electronics markets and 30 years of boating experience. He has held engineering and senior executive management positions with a number of companies including GTE, Harris, ABA Industries, Inframetrics and Elbit Systems - the last three at the President and CEO level. He has both BS and MS degrees in electrical engineering from Penn State. He started his career as a radar and communications system engineer and, throughout his career, gained extensive experience with GPS including managing a corporate business unit that developed major portions of GPS for the Air Force. Well written, nicely illustrated, and utterly practical

For most boaters, power or sail, this is your best bet for a single, clear, comprehensive guide to piloting and navigation. The author, Sweet, is very knowledgeable and takes a straightforward approach to navigation in the electronic age. He makes a strong case for developing the skills to navigate without relying on electronic Chartplotters and Global Positioning Systems (which CAN and DO fail, like any other electronic device); however, he does not condescend to the reader on this issue, nor does he exclude those electronic devices from consideration. On the contrary, the nicest aspect of this book is the way it INTEGRATES electronic and traditional means of piloting, showing you how each can complement the other in useful ways. The result is a book that will teach you how to understand and use your electronics better, while developing traditional navigational skills that may save your life (or at least save you some inconvenience) the next time your electronics go down.

I've read a lot of books on navigation in the last 20 years. Sweet does a better-than-average job of explaining traditional piloting techniques in an accessible manner, with very nice illustrations that allow the reader to reflect on and absorb some of the abstract concepts involved. (Piloting is not hard, but it can feel overwhelming and confusing at first until you really "get" it.) Sweet is also one of the only authors I've come across who talks about electronic navigation methods as the normal reality for day-to-day navigation among most boaters (which it is!). Most other books relegate electronic devices to an isolated chapter, seem hopelessly out of date with regard to modern GPS innovations, and/or discuss electronic navigation as if it is an afterthought. Sweet talks as if he understands, realistically, that GPS will be the primary source of navigational information for the boaters he is addressing, and that is why his tone and approach come across so well. Along the way, he makes good recommendations about other resources to consult, such as Nigel Calder's definitive guide to reading a nautical chart, and to the free Coastal Explorer software that provides an excellent way to view NOAA raster charts for free on your computer. I am convinced of his credibility. This is a resource I would not hesitate to trust. Highly recommended to anyone looking for a clear and comprehensive guide to modern navigation.

I would NOT buy the Kindle edition, since the illustrations in this book are very important to developing a full understanding of certain concepts, and would not likely display well on the Kindle (smaller, without color, etc.).

Excellent Piloting Book

I've got a half dozen books on coastal navigation (piloting actually) and all are good, but Bob Sweet's book integrates GPS with traditional piloting methods in a way none of the rest do. Most books are either all about getting the most out of your GPS, or they concentrate on traditional charting methods then update the subject with separate chapters on GPS, RADAR, LORAN, etc.
This book approaches 21 first century piloting as an integrated plan for most conditions that shows the roles played by your charts, your electronics, and your common sea sense in a balanced, minute by minute situational awareness where no single tool predominates.
In short, Sweet's book answers the question I always had after reading other books: "OK, so how to I put all this together on the bay with only two hands, two eyes and one brain? This book shows how to do it without overloading yourself.

A well planned book, manufactured nicely with good paper and color.

Practical and Thorough

A great book for how most people navigate today. I completed the ASA navigation course, but its complete lack of GPS use and focus on complex math made for a steep learning curve, and I was not comfortable relying on it in practical applications without much more time on the water. This book uses a nice combination of paper charts and electronics, that actually works on the water. Being six years old, much of the specific tech has changed, but I was still able to use it with a new Garmin handheld chart-plotter to navigate my first three day charter in the Tampa Bay area. I wish I would have read it before purchasing a GPS as I would have purchased a more simple unit and invested more in other navigation areas.

You've GOT to be kidding me!

I guess I'm going to be the only one-star review here, but this thing is worthless.

1. Grammar / Typos
No exaggeration when I say it's probably the worst writing I've ever encountered in a book. Run-on sentences, bad grammar and typos make it unreadable. (Did anyone proof this before publication?) Verbatim example: "When you are practiced this, the object will be more likely to start moving."

2. It's a pamphlet, not a book
Yes, it's bound like a book, but with a total of 41 pages (with several blank ones at the end) and huge images that take up halves of pages, there's very little content.

So, rather than deal with the whole Amazon return process, I ate the $7 and just threw this "book" in the trash. Save yourself the $7 and just google free content on the Web.

Good and interesting book to read must give a go. One of the reason why I like it is because it's a good read and you can understand it a lot better than others. Not to mention it gets straight to the point!!!!

About the Author

Sarah Kane (1971 – 1999) was an English dramatist. Still my favorite playwright; may always be my favorite playwright.

A great way to thrust yourself into the world of 'In-Yer-Face-Theatre'. Whenever I read one of her plays, I find myself almost forced to read it to the very end as if pausing the pain, even for a day, could cause me even more trauma. Once finished, I usually cry or sit in awe of what I've just experienced. I then completely divorce myself from the crude acts that took place for months at a time merely to return to the same story that I allowed myself to forget in order to continue functioning. And the cycle begins again. I have read that Mark Ravenhill is also in Kane's ranks if you find yourself in need for more from this genres.

Desolate, Forlorn, Hopeful

For a long time, Sarah Kane's name was almost a curse word, but this is manifestly unfair. Her work is challenging, poetic, austere, and can threaten people who want theatre to be simple, cheerful entertainment. But for audiences who want their art to speak to the truth of our human situation, Sarah Kane was one of the bright lights of late 20th Century theatre.

The five plays and one screenplay comprising Kane's corpus chart a remarkable arc out of the "real" world to a stunning, surrealistic landscape. Her first three plays could be called realistic, but not naturalistic. They mix social commentary, secular spirituality, stunning brutality, and dream imagery to create a tenor too real for the real world.

In the introduction to this volume, David Grieg says that Kane cast off her parents' evangelical faith in her teens. It's easy to see that in these plays. She needs absolutes in the world, but she can no longer turn to God. Ordinary human violence leaves us bleak and forlorn. And yet, particularly in "Blasted" and "Cleansed," moments of hope inevitably poke through.

Her later plays change their tone. Though she still lives in a desolate, godless world, her style is more mature, even as it turns more inward and personal. "Crave," her last play produced during her life, dramatizes her private thoughts to provide one of the most nuanced introspections in recent theatre. And "4.48 Psychosis," based on Kane's stays in mental institutions, is so personal that it wholly dispenses with character attribution, stage direction, and other conventions.

"Skin," the script for a ten-minute TV film, is primarily a curiosity. It takes up some themes and dream icons from Kane's plays, but it reads poorly. It's thick with camera directions and narrative that get between her and the reader. The film is on the internet; Google it and compare the finished product to the script, as an oddity, if you must.

Sarah Kane's suicide, clearly at a time when her best work was not yet past, leaves a major hole in the theatre world. But this hole still hasn't been recognized in America. Her debut play, "Blasted," didn't get its New York premiere until the fall of 2008, fifteen years after its London premiere and nearly ten years after Kane's death.

It's downright sad that Kane's entire body of work can fit in such a slim volume. But the fact that her work survived its initial assaults to be recognized as contemporary classics gives me hope. The trajectory she began needs to be continued, because the needs and gaps she realized still live in the heart of world theatre today.

Sarah Kane's collected plays represent an underestimated force in theater. Much like the work of Elfriede Jelinek or Ntozake Shange, Kane takes a private pain (losing oneself in another or testing the limits of proclaimed love) and creates a verbal landscape that the audience must inhabit, either by force of shock or noble acceptance of empathy. In either case, her plays must be reckoned with upon finishing. I think perhaps the most intriguing and powerful to me was 4.48 Psychosis, her final and posthumously performed play. There are no defined characters because who cannot claim a piece within the multitude of confessions that the play really unfolds as. Brutally honest and intentionally confrontational, this play, above the others, embodies the last possible moments of hope in anyone's life. Kane's characters rarely make the choice to latch on to these moments, but they are there and cannot be ignored.

About the Author
Henry Marsh studied medicine at the Royal Free Hospital in London, became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1984, and was appointed Consultant Neurosurgeon at Atkinson Morley's/St George's Hospital in London in 1987. He has been the subject of two major documentary films, Your Life in Their Hands, which won the Royal Television Society Gold Medal, and The English Surgeon, which won an Emmy. He is married to the anthropologist and writer Kate Fox.

Most neurosurgeon’s lives are punctuated by periods of deep despair

This book is well written, gripping, and fascinating. Sometimes it is sad or gruesome. It is accurate in the descriptions of medical details, surgical procedures, and the life of brain surgeons. If you like to think of your physician as a demi-god you should not read this book. If you can handle the truth, read on.

As an anesthesiologist, I read with a mix of amusement and rueful resignation. Dr. Marsh is a true representative of his species, the neurosurgeon. They are by turns kind, irritating, cocky, courageous, arrogant, brilliant, obsessive, awe-inspiring, and lonely. They usually graduated at the top of their medical school class. Their residency did not end until they were well into their 30’s. Many hospitals have lots of pediatricians, intensivists, internists, and hospitalists, but they only have one neurosurgeon. Even in a field of doctors, a collection of brainy nerds, they stand alone.

Their arrogance is undeniable. Henry Marsh relates how he was stuck in a line of shoppers at the grocery store and thinks with irritation that none of them could do what he just did today, so why does he have to wait behind them? Like fighter pilots or Special Forces, society is not comfortable with such people, but when we need them, we need them desperately. And we always need them.

There is a moment before every invasive medical procedure when you could pause and contemplate the enormous consequences of failure. If you spend too much time doing that, you will end up paralyzed, and the patient will suffer. If you spend too much time thinking about the appalling human carnage that will result from surgery gone wrong, you will never take up the knife. No matter how skillful, knowledgeable, and careful you are, there will be carnage. No one knows this better than the neurosurgeon. To cut into a human brain takes enormous hubris. Every procedure includes the risk of death, but there are worse things than death. Most doctors will see worse-than-death only rarely during their career, but the neurosurgeon sees it often. It is the nature of their specialty. It is beyond extreme. For example, I induce a death-like coma in my patients daily, then rescue them from it. Yet I could not abide such a life of enormous risk.

Dr. Marsh is a writer of depth and skill. He probably does everything well, if he does it at all. If you think that neurosurgery is fascinating, you should read this book.

Fascinating, captivating, and not too anatomically dense. Easy read for the curious.

Why you'll love this book:

Dr. Henry Marsh does a terrific job of tackling incredibly dense subjects (neuroscience/neurosurgery) and structuring his memoir in incredibly intriguing, elegant, and fascinating ways. Out of curiosity, I've tried to tackle books that explain the brain and its operations in the past, only to become overwhelmed by the complexity of the anatomical references. Perhaps because these are written by academics, I've yet to finish a book. It is important to remember that Dr. Marsh is a surgeon and thus has a history of explaining these complexities to patients and those with less expertise in the field. This allows him to draft a splendid memoir of mistakes, loss, triumphs, etc. from his career. In my favorite passage, Dr. Marsh explains a typical aneurism procedure with such beautiful allegory of a knight in shining armor darting through the sections of the brain off on a hunt for a mythical beast.

Why You Won't Love This Book:
There is a bit of detail when it comes to the surgical procedures that may make those with a weak stomach squirm. There is undoubtably stories of loss of life that are quite tragic as well. I also want to point out that this book is a memoir at heart and doesn't really leave the reader with any sort of leadership learnings.

Written by the crustiest, crankiest, most brilliant British surgeon imaginable, Dr. Henry Marsh. He takes you inside the human brain both physically and intellectually, through a 40-year series of insanely complex and riveting microsurgeries (usually Marsh battling from his Star Wars-style deck to circumvent some overwhelmingly horrible cancer, infection, stroke or hemorrhage). The language is simple and utterly revealing; the parade of souls who parade through his theater (his own mother among them) heartbreaking; the complexities of human consciousness (and the loss of it) laid bare. This goddam book is so compelling I was forced to dump my two month-long obsession with Jo Nesbo’s Harry Hole thrillers to plunge in.

and my aide were anxious to hear what came next and disappointed if we were too busy to read

I bought this as a read-aloud for a middle school special education class studying the Stone Age. There was enough content about migrating with the seasons, tools and fire, the introduction of the dog, hunting and gathering, belief in spirits, and how the family unit worked together that it ended up being a major jumping off place for many topics. The story was compelling and generally fast-paced. All the students, even my "cool" 8th grade boys, and my aide were anxious to hear what came next and disappointed if we were too busy to read. A definite hit!

Interesting read

Very well-researched and realistic picture of life in the Ice Age. Written for young adult, but interesting enough to be enjoyed by adults. Our teacher daughter recommended it to me because of my interest in pre-history, and I'm glad she did. It was written quite a few years ago, but seems as relevant as if written yesterday.
