How good is it to pick up the Dalai Lama’s latest musings on ethics being more important than religion’ for free on kindle?

For those who know the Dalai Lama’s themes, this short book provides a refresher or for those new to the Dalai Lama this provides an approachable introduction.

The baseline message is there. Co-operation is more constructive than competition. Compassion and love is more effective than more negative emotions.

This book has a focus on our modern wars. Islam is not mentioned once in the book but surely is a lot of what he refers to. Another key theme which he is much stronger on these days is environmentalism. For me, it’s notable in a book written by him about ethics is that he does not renew his appraisal of the psychology industry in the West. Amazingly, he still sees potential for him being returned to China and he points to the reunification of Europe to make this point.

This is a short and effective piece of communication. Five Stars.

pragmatic guidance

I love the Dalai Lama's approach to enlightenment through joy so I appreciate his philosophy. The nice thing about this book is the recognition by a major religious leader that religion too often falls short of serving our most common needs and that a secular set of ethics might be a more appropriate tool set. It's not easy for a religious leader to admit that their religion is not the end all be all for everyone, especially considering everyone thinks their religion is the true answer to all our problems.

For those interested in both ethics and the perspective of the Dalai Lama this book is a short, interesting Q&A with His Holiness. Don't expect a deep discussion of what ethic are - or are not. The title says it all: His Holiness states ethics is more important than religion. Coming from one of the world's most influential religious leaders, that says a lot.

About the authors:

David Boddy is a Research Fellow in the Department of Management at the University of Glasgow. He teaches courses for experienced managers on the management issues raised by computer-based information systems, which is the focus of his research. He is the author of two other books: Management: An Introduction (2007); and Managing Projects: Building and Leading the Team (2002) both published by Pearson Education.

Albert Boonstra is an associate professor at the Faculty of Management and Organisation, University of Groningen, The Netherlands. His research focuses on the human and organisational issues of implementing and using information and communication technologies. He teaches IT-management-related courses, and consults in the management of information systems for profit and not-for-profit organisations.

Graham Kennedy works in the internal consultancy division of the Royal Bank of Scotland. He has over eighteen years experience as a manager of change initiatives in industries as varied as financial services and engineering. This has provided him with many insights into the opportunities – and problems – which new technologies present to users.

 

 

About the Author
David Boddy is a Research Fellow at the School of Business & Management, University of Glasgow. He is author of two other books published by Pearson Education: Management, an Introduction (2007) and Managing Projects (2002).

A Very Good Textbook

I use "Managing Information Systems: Strategy and Organisation, 3rd Edition" in my "Management of Information Technology" course as the required textbook. The book is an excellent example from the British school of textbooks: condensed, yet relevant and very well-written. Each chapter begins with a mini case with a set of questions at the end. Throughout the chapter, as the subject develops, case questions--sometimes along with new information about the case--reemerge to give the reader a chance to apply the subject matter to the opening case. This feature is invaluable form a pedagogical point of view because it relates the case directly to the subject matter at hand. I look forward to the 4th edition of the title since the material covered and reading lists are slightly outdated. More comprehensive coverage of Web 2.0 and social media and their impact on organizations and information systems is required.

What a treat to tag along with Chaplin as he returns to Europe in 1921 for "an escape" from Hollywood. I was fascinated by his language, his terms, his observations. This is wonderful insight into one of the great creative geniuses of our time. I also appreciated his view on an England and France that has dramatically changed since his visit. If you are interested in Chaplin's life and art, you'll find this book to your liking.

Great story!

I love stories about dogs and how they can teach us about unconditional love. I loved the ending most of all. However, a word of caution is necessary. I cried during some of it. It's just amazing how much we can learn about life from dogs if we would just open our hearts and our minds to it.

Not sure why someone thought it would be a good idea to make it a paper back

This is a very large and thick text book. Not sure why someone thought it would be a good idea to make it a paper back. I've paid allot of money for my medical text books and enjoy keeping them for future reference. I wish this one had a hard cover instead of a flimsy paper one. This one has been slid in and out of my backpack just a few times and is already showing wear and tear.
