Use the online resources

I used this book and had to take the GRE in one month. I needed a refresher since I had not taken a test in over 10 years. With somewhat minimal studying I was able to increase my test scores 7 points on the quantitative and 4 on the verbal. I highly recommend taking the online quizzes and reviewing the answers immediately - That is what worked best for me.

Don't be fooled by the online/mobile availability!

It talks about an online/mobile subscription yet I am unable to access it on my phone. Every time I try and answer a question I am told that I must purchase the book, which I already have!

Three Cinematic Giants

I just finished reading this in-depth examination of the lives and work of these three cinematic giants (John Ford, John Wayne, and Ward Bond), and it's a fascinating study for burgeoning old-Hollywood aficionados and serious fans of cinema alike. Chronologically tracing the intertwining lives of these three "good-bad men" who were not unlike the characters in their films (Ford directed Bond and Wayne in nearly thirty pictures each), Nollen is at once objective and affectionate in his analysis, and there's a wealth of source material including documents, letters, telegrams, and plenty of rare photographs. There are riveting anecdotes, some great yarn-spinning, and the work definitely touches on their peccadillos and absurdities, though never salaciously.
It's deftly written and never dry; while many books of this kind become bogged down by academic posturing, Nollen remains true to the spirit of his subjects and opts for a two-fisted, no B.S. approach. I really appreciate how deeply he throws himself into the work, freely admitting "a meaningful (though a bit one-sided) conversation with a tombstone or two." He's as a film writer should be- intense, obsessive, and highly-focused; reverent without succumbing to hollow adulation. Highly recommended.

A Detailed History of Three Bad Men: John Ford, John Wayne and Ward Bond

This is a very interesting detailed narrative of John Ford's interaction with two of his most famous stars: John Wayne and Ward Bond. John Ford was a dictator in every sense of the word. But because he was also a genius when it came to making a first class movie, his "stars" put up with his abuse and actually loved and respected him. You'll learn all sorts of behind-the-scenes goings on, that you never ever imagined could have happened. Anyone who is a fan of John Wayne and Ward Bond will find it fascinating reading!

Pappy, Duke and the Judge

As a lifelong film fan, I've read many books about Ford and Wayne and Bond is always mentioned, usually as the BUTT of a ribald joke. Nollen manages to fill what was obviously a void by giving Bond's life and work equal measure. The research and meticulous documentation of each film and personal anecdote is impressive.
What I found fascinating was the nurturing/toxic relationship between Pappy Ford and his two surrogate sons - Duke Wayne and The Judge, so nicknamed by Wayne because Bond spent so much time on the football bench. All three were artists and prone to crushing alcoholic binges. The correspondence among the three indicate they could express their love on paper but were verbally and physically abusive when together.
I practically devoured this book and have re-read passages again. I know I'll be referring to it in the future, so the price isn't an issue with me.

Worth the Effort!

Mark Thurston is a pretty insightful psychologist, so his book is definitely worth reading. He does a good job of stressing free will and the creative abilities of the soul (even if he isn't so clear about definitions and boundaries.). Other useful themes include balance, diet for body and mind, responsibility towards others, living a purposeful life, and the importance of connecting with the soul (although he places too much emphasis on meditation and not enough on dreams.) Thurston does speak out against cults, but he is sadly willing to accept cult ideology like oneness with God (which feeds the ego while simultaneously enslaving it.) Still his emphasis is on being the change you seek, so he values the inner character above the outer life circumstances. Supposedly the inner drives the outer. His book includes practical steps so that growth can be tracked. Growing the inner person might be more work than anticipated, but it is worth the effort.

Informative Book

Years ago (about 18 to be exact) when I started on my spiritual journey, the first book I read was Edgar Cayce and I honestly don't know why. I happened upon it, I believe and it started me on a quest that has lasted all this time. I have read countless books on spirituality and my psychic abilities and how to live a spiritual life. However, Edgar Cayce and his teachings have been clear, to the point, insightful and more importantly, I feel I am getting the truth. I am not misguided in any way. This is another book that makes me feel as though I am gaining something more to take with me, And after 18 years and having read so many books, that is not always easy. I often find myself going "yes, yes, I know that, everyone knows that..." This book can absolutely be instrumental for anyone embarking on their journey, and if this is you, I say "Have fun!!"

I have been familiar with Edgar Cayce's books since 1980, but had not read this one till now. The different approaches and very positive ways to make your life have more meaning and to expand your horizons in all areas made me love this book. It also provides "thinking out of the box" suggestions that I have not read in other books. I recommend this book to those of ages 26 + who want to either get out of a daily rut in life, who need encouragement during a difficult time, or those who need guidance in starting their life over again in healthy, positive directions.

Very useful and fun to read

Written with electrical engineering samples, this book is useful for anyone doing engineering of any kind. The book captures the practical wisdom of a life-long practitioner, someone who was in the trenches of the engineer's world. I am a software engineer and found much that was useful for me. Chapters like "If I Could See It, I Could Fix It" are very useful. Overall, the author is more concerned with highlighting good questions to ask and how engineers think than providing specific answers, which is why the book is so useful. Asking the right questions is something that is learned over time and much more important than the specific answer in a particular context.

The book is also hilariously funny. The author has a wonderful sense of humor that had me laughing uproariously many times.

Maybe there IS another way of winning

Balague's biography on Guardiola left me wondering if there really was another way of winning. The book barely gives any insights into Guardiola's mind perhaps as a testament to the Spaniard's reluctance to open up to the press. I would have expected a bit more comments on the subject itself from close relatives; comments or even anecdotes from important figures such as Bielsa, Begiristain or even FCB 'exes' Laporta or Rossell would have made an important contribution both historically as well as tactically to the book. I was left with a feeling that most of the research for this book came from two or three other books related to Barcelona and which the author refers to in his narrative. I am already through the first chapter on one of these books and I can't believe the amount of information that has been sourced, IMHO, from it. One funny story happened to me when I was looking for information to read about the Spaniard and the press was coming up with stories about Guardiola signing for a new club. An Italian sports broadcaster broke news that he had already signed for a German club (another FCB, LOL) and Balague's twitter account and blog page said specifically that he didn't, not yet, and that he needed time.
By the following week the German club confirmed not only that he was already on-board, but that he was signed months before. I guess that tells you how much the subject and his author worked together on this book.

This book gives fantastic insight to Guardiola & Barcelona. What they managed to achieve is nothing short of extraordinary and this boos gives intimate knowledge as to events going on behind the scenes that fans aren't typically aware of.

Kudos to the author and everyone that's a part of arguably the greatest football team in the history of the sport.

Fantastic read for ardent fan

I was so pleased to have purchased this one! I love Barcelona football, am a great admirer of Pep Guardiola and it was a delight to find out what went on behind the scenes. From never being a fan of Bayern Munich, I now watch some of their games and follow what's going on, all due to Pep! Thank you for a book that I couldn't put down.

Thought provoking and emotional

This book is based on the facts that changed the lives and lifestyles of the German people as Hitler led them into WWII, some blindly, some willfully allowing the changes. I found myself living in the mind and heart of a young American girl trapped there, finding herself engulfed in the conflict of her emotions and Christian values as she watched the changes in people she loved. I could see many correlations to what's happening in America today and it made me examine my own strengths and weaknesses and how prepared I am as a Christian to deal with the same controversies and changes. What would I do in a similar situation?. I loved the book and was immersed immediately and couldn't put it down.

and tells the story of a young woman out of her element doing wonderful human acts of kindness. Strong in her christian beliefs, it truly is an inspiration to be shared.

Jo Mielziner (1901-1976) was an acclaimed scenic designer of the American theatre. Over five decades his career spanned the flowering of the modern theatre in the USA, and he designed many of its most famous productions, including "A Streetcar Named Desire", "Death of a Salesman", "Guys and Dolls" and "Carousel". He worked with a roster of great playwrights, directors and producers on a staggering total of 260 shows, many of them theatrical premieres, but also including ballets, operas and motion pictures. He pioneered many concepts of design - such as the capturing of a visual metaphor for the production -that are taken for granted today. His influence for succeeding generations has been enormous. This study covers his life and work and is illustrated with sketches and fully-rendered designs.

Every once in a while a book comes along that is both beautiful and informative, and this gorgeous book on the great stage designer, Jo Mielziner, is one of them. Mielziner is considered one of the greatest (perhaps the greatest) set designers of all time. He designed the original sets for A Streetcar Named Desire, Death of a Salesman, and Carousel and operas such as Don Giovanni. This book covers his entire career, bringing the reader into the golden world of Broadway at a time when it really was a place of magic and divine inspiration. The 140 color photos are marvelous, though one wishes for more of the larger pictures (economics, surely; the $45 price tag is a bargain). Henderson, a journalist and theater historian of international reputation, has written a fascinating text, with background details that offer insights into this crazy world. For more than 50 years, from 1925 to 1976, stage designer Jo Mielziner was a force to be reckoned with on Broadway and beyond. Part of a generation that took the radical design and lighting ideas of Gordon Craig and Adolph Appia and made them their own, Mielziner designed sets for the premier productions of many of the plays we now consider modern American classics, including A Glass Menagerie, A Streetcar Named Desire , and Death of a Salesman. An amazingly prolific designer, Mielziner also made his mark on American musical theater, designing shows as different as South Pacific , Guys and Dolls , and Gypsy. This glossy, lavishly illustrated, oversize book presents hundreds of Mielziner's designs and drawings, many in color, documenting the full arc of his career, from '20s work with the Theatre Guild to his final projects, assisting the design of new theaters throughout America. A must, must, must have!!!

Wow!!! Ms. Henderson has written an amazing book. Not only does it have the most beautiful color reproductions of Mielziner's work I've ever seen and in profusion, but she has also written a rich and detailed biography of Jo Mielziner.
I had been waiting for this book, but it exceeded all expectations. It is a invaluable history of modern American Stage Design, covering all the important personalities in fascinating detail, tracing the artistic progression and growth of American theater.
Anyone with an interest in American Theater in the 20th Century will benefit and be informed by this book. Her breadth of knowledge is astonishing and her digressions into side alleys are always informative and fascinating. She uses facts and figures to illuminate the shifting perspectives of the "business" of Broadway. And her analysis of design trends are intelligent and enlightening. (I would only quibble with her overly positive view of Mielziner's Architectural consulting.)
As a picture book it's great! As a biography it is marvelous! As a history of 20th Century Broadway Theater it is a must have.

Jo Mielziner - a forgotten genius

Mary Henderson has given us an invaluable insight in the world of Jo Mielziner. So often the names of creative people who ensure that a production "works" are never known or easily forgotten by the viewing audience. The set and lighting designs of Mielziner for plays and shows like A Streetcar Named Desire, Death of a Salesman, South Pacific, etc. were considered brilliant and groundbreaking by the theatre world of his time. Mielziner also greatly influenced modern stage design (the East Room stage in the White House and the Denver Center Theatre, for example) and with his art and creative insight put his unique stamp on the world of modern theatre until this day. An overview of his work was long overdue. But Mary Henderson has given us far more than that. She has given us Jo Mielziner, the person, by providing fascination facts and photographs of Jo's private life. The many colorful prints of his designs and the enjoyable flow of the text make this book a "must have" and a wonderful gift for anyone interested in the history of 20th century theatre.

Comprehensive but not critical

Mary Henderson has done a great job of cataloging Mielziner's life and work, but in the end that's all she has done. The book lacks a critical bite, at times seeming a little too biased towards its subject. Mielziner comes off as having flawless work, with any bad results being caused by narrow-minded or misguided collaborators.
The book also disappoints in that while it has many renderings, it lacks any ground plans, or sections, or other working drawings. It's very difficult to get a true sense of someone's design without seeing a ground plan. Perhaps they are not available, or maybe they didn't seem pretty enough to include.
To be fair, Henderson has done a great service to the theater community in writing this book, and while she doesn't give herself freedom to do close readings of Mielziner's designs, the comprehensiveness of her work does have its own value. It's too bad - in the end she has successfully argued her case of Mielziner as a seminal figure in theatrical design, but she doesn't follow through and give his work the critical assessment deserving of a true master artist.

Precise to the point study guide for the exam

I bought the book as a study guide for the VCA-DCV exam and it helped me pass it on my first attempt. It is broken down into six chapters that cover all the needed information to pass the exam. It also provides access to an online study tool that contains hundreds of questions which are like the ones you should expect on the real exam.
Four stars because I think for such a small book it is too expensive.

VCA-DCV being retired November 30, 2015

Keep in mind that the VCA-DCV is being retired November 30, 2015 and being replaced with the VCA6-DCV. I think this book is based on vSphere 5.5, so it's not going to have the latest/greatest topics for the new cert. However, you will still get a good basis of what vSphere is - you will just have to follow it up with v6 specific items.

Concise and to the point

This book has excellent exam coverage. The author did a great job explaining the different data center challenges and the solutions provided by VMware. This book define/explains a lot of VMware vocabulary and the underlying virtualization theory. The content does a good job laying the ground work for the VCP-DCV certification.
