Outstanding DVD included - but book itself is average

The included DVD is outstanding with interviews of japanese designers, and funny commercials. The design examples in the book are average. You can go to EPCOT in FL and see similar designs in the Japanese store.

Another source of inspiration

I picked this up, being a huge fan of Japanese design.

As a source of inspiration for graphic designers, this book does a terrific job. I currently have at least 10 pages flagged for follow-up, to use as a launching pad for my next concepts.

The book covers packaging, posters & ads, print, and web design, with each section offering up a visual smorgasboard (or revolving sushi-plate, if you will) of designs, including CDs, logos, ad campaigns, billboards, etc. As an added bonus, the CD offers a visual tour of Tokyo, interviews with prominent people in the Japanese advertising and design world, and samples of ads that have run on television.

All in all, this, as most Taschen books, is a brief, very general survey, with little if no copy, serving to inspire visually rather than educate intellectually. But the price is right, and the book is a great resource for visual designers everywhere.

Design at his best...

I have to disagree with the previous comment, the one referring to "Japanese Art". Sure, it would attract artists, architects and industrial designers as well, because it's such a beautiful book...
However, this book is targeted to Graphic Designers since it's called Japanese Graphics Now. I've seen it in detail... it contains a lot of stuff, from letterhead logos, web design, product and packaging design, poster and advertising examples... everything a graphic (or even an industrial) designer wants in a HUGE ammount (this book is really big... hundreds of pages).
The most interesting feature about this book is that the Oriental people, specially the Japanese have such a different notions of visualization and space treatment, that the way they develop graphic projects usually offer very different results to the ones we expect... (A signage project for a hospital IN THE FLOOR ??????????? Come on guys !!...)
Of course everything is very aesthetic and artistic, but all I have to say is that this book is REALLY a mind opener for graphic designers everywhere in the world...

About the Author
William L. Kruer is the Chief Scientist for Plasma Physics in the Inertial Confinement Fusion Theory Division at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Dr. Kruer received his Ph.d. in Astrophysics from Princeton University in 1969. A Fellow of the American Physical Society and a recipient of its Maxwell Prize, he has published numerous articles on Plasma Theory and Simulation, Laser Plasma Interactions, and Inertial Confinement Fusion.

I honestly do wish this book were more helpful

The title pretty much says it all. I feel like this book was originally 2 or 3 times it's current length, i.e. the editors made Kruer cut it down to a lowly ~200 pages. The derivation provided is asymptotic to the Classical Electrodynamics, Jackson, level (i.e. terse, much outside work needed), and additionally suffers from a real lack of useful explanation/physical understanding (the first is ok, considering this is a graduate level subject, the second is most definitely not - read: why am I reading this book then?).

I would guess this book were written by a math major actually, if it weren't for the fact that it uses naught much more than Maxwell's equations (in Gaussian units, fyi) and the 2-fluid model (i.e. relatively simple). Also, the notation in this book is absolutely atrocious, probably one of the worst examples I have ever seen in any physical science document, ever. Seemingly random subscripts and variable letters appear/change on virtually every line. Variables from two chapters ago are randomly thrown in without explanation, it can really get tedious.

All that being said, the book WILL provide some insight, if you naturally have good insight into such topics, and you are willing to spend more time than should be necessary with it.

It sucks, I honestly really wanted this book to be my bible, but sadly I feel it falls far short of even a *decent* reference.

Following in this tradition, Foundations of Stochastic Inventory Theory has a dual purpose, serving as an advanced textbook designed to prepare doctoral students to do research on the mathematical foundations of inventory theory and as a reference work for those already engaged in such research.

The author begins by presenting two basic inventory models: the economic order quantity model, which deals with "cycle stocks," and the newsvendor model, which deals with "safety stocks." He then describes foundational concepts, methods, and tools that prepare the reader to analyze inventory problems in which uncertainty plays a key role. Dynamic optimization is an important part of this preparation, which emphasizes insights gained from studying the role of uncertainty, rather than focusing on the derivation of numerical solutions and algorithms (with the exception of two chapters on computational issues in infinite-horizon models).

All fourteen chapters in the book, and four of the five appendixes, conclude with exercises that either solidify or extend the concepts introduced. Some of these exercises have served as Ph.D. qualifying examination questions in the Operations, Information, and Technology area of the Stanford Graduate School of Business.

After his thoughtful, elegant novel Knight Moves, Williams wrenchingly shifts gears for this heavy-metal adventure. It is set with acknowledgement in Roger Zelazny's Damnation Alley, when corporate Orbitals control what's left of a postwar America, now balkanized and armed to the teeth. Ex-fighter pilot Cowboy, "hardwired" via skull sockets directly to his lethal electronic hardware, teams up with Sarah, an equally cyborized gun-for-hire, to make a last stab at independence from the rapacious Orbitals. The story, though, is buried under an elaborate techno-punk style of the sort William Gibson popularized in Neuromancer. In both cases, it is a pose, a baroque nostalgia for Hemingway and film noir; it only plays at nihilism, terror and despair. The best effect is Williams's future version of a brain-scrambled vet: a dead buddy of Cowboy's whose scattered bits and pieces of computer memory now constitute a ragged semblance of a man. Such nuggets are hard to find amid the amplified, rock-'n-roll prose.

One of the best

While this book, like Neuromancer, is one of the founding books in the cyberpunk movement, the two books could not be more different - except they are the same.
That is, Hardwired is a story set in a future dystopia where people are caught up in events that lead to changes that seem beyond the scope of changes that people like them could make. Of course, there are drugs and other fun stuff, a network of computers that are hacked, and large corporations.
Hardwired is different in that it is a much better action story, with the main characters being a street samurai and a panzer driver. Gives the book a much different focus than Neuromancer with a decker as a main character.
And the world is much more alive. Dirtboys and mudgirls are moving, struggling, alive in glorious MOTION.
It's a book that you can immerse yourself in for the hours it takes to read it, blink, stagger outside, and look around at the world, disappointed, because it's not the right world. Somehow, the world of Hardwired is so compelling that you forget for a while our world.
That's about as high a recommendation as a book can get.

One of the most important works of the last 20 years.

Three works define cyberpunk as a genre -- William Gibson's "Neuromancer," Bruce Sterling's "The Artificial Kid" and Walter Jon Williams' "Hardwired."
Of the three, "Hardwired" is certainly the most fun to read.
Williams' writing has always jumped off the page, but none of his other books move quite as fast or quite as gracefully (with, perhaps, the exception of the three Drake Maijistral books) as "Hardwired."
A chugging, gut-wrenching, pulse-pounding juggernaut of a book -- if you haven't read "Hardwired," you haven't even started understanding modern sci-fi.
This is cyberpunk at its best.

Easily the best cyberpunk

Hardwired is about a panzerboy called Cowboy and a dirtgirl/assassin named Sarah and their unlikely alliance. The megacorporations that rule the earth from orbital platforms don't care too much about what goes on as long as they continue to gain in power and wealth. Sometimes the people being stepped on don't like it, but what can they do? They may not be as helpless as the people in charge think.
The setting reminds me of Blade Runner, but maybe a bit grungier. The characters are well crafted and convincing. The plot is gripping, and the writing flows off the pages.
This books is from 1986, so it is not the same stale cyberpunk junk that you may be used to. Check it out!

Each section begins with a large contour drawing of upper and lowercase letters suitable for copying. The sans-serif, gothic letters are easy to read but the capital "I" and the lowercase "L" may confuse children since they look identical. Simple words highlighting the featured letter are interspersed along the borders, while alliterative poems showcase the letter sounds. One quibble: girls usuallly fill passive, weak, or cowardly roles in these rhymes. While Julius "jogged" and Lyle "lugged," Sue "scurried away" and Isabelle "slipped" and cried. Educational and fun for children ages two to six, Alphabet Art provides fun while inspiring alphabet memorization. There are over 80 creative ways to learn the ABC's throughout the book, including making an alphabet zoo, playing ABC games, going on letter hunts, participating in finger plays, and reading rebus (picture) sentences. Art materials are also introduced to create "texturized" letters and animals. The author's experiences as an art teacher and love of creative learning are obvious. From Allan the Alligator to Zelda the Zebra, kids will enjoy the learning process through interactive play. The reinforcement of letter familiarity is achieved by offering several types of games with the same letter as their focus. This book would be a welcome addition to any home or school library. Children will be entertained and inspired to learn as a direct result of the games and art projects presented in this book. What A Neat Book!

This is an incredibly fun book for both toddlers and preschoolers to help them learn their ABC's! Not only does it have really fun crafts to construct the letters of the alphabet, but it also incorporates objects that begin with those letters. So if you want to make the letter B, draw the letter and cut it out of a paper plate, then cut out a bubble envelope in the same shape and glue it on. That way the child can make the association between B and "b"ubble. There's also a second activity they can do for every letter, so in the case of "B" they also get to make a butterfly, something both my kids are really taken with.

The activities included in the book use very simple tools you won't necessarily have to go out of your want to hunt for. For example: a paper muffin cup, cardboard, construction paper, aluminum foil, tape, crayon, maker, scissors, etc, and the crafts are super cute! This book is a great testament to keeping learning fun!
