If you know enough to be here, this book won't teach you anything new

Not really about gender at all. It's mostly about how multiple systems of oppression (race, class, age, gender, etc.) work together. What little content there is about gender, if you're curious enough to be reading this book, you already know.

I want to love this book.

I wanted so much to like this book, really I did. Not bad, but very repetitive without making it's point clearly. Got more help from a website which said "If you are thinking you are gender dysphoric, you probably are."

Main positive: De-constructing the binary. Brilliant, straight forward (giggle) and to the point. Thank you from the bottom of my soul for that, it is the whole reason for the stars this book gets.

Main negative: Too much pressure sell once the binary was de-constructed. I got it, now give me some hints on how to use it instead of trying to resell me on the non-existent binary.

We used this book in my English class. When I first saw the title, I didn't think it was appropriate for the class, but decided that I would enter into this quarter with an open mind. Needless to say, this book was very educational for me. Not about myself, but about learning about the different gender types.

Students renting beware!

If you're renting the book for class and using Kindle for PC, there are going to be a few excerpts missing. The first piece is Bartolome's In Defense of Indians, there are a few more that my class hasn't gotten to. Apparently this only happens on the Kindle for PC, as the missing excerpt shows up on the iPad. I've contacted Amazon and they said they're contacting the publisher. If you're going to be renting this book for class, I'd check first with Amazon to see if the problem has been resolved. ONLY applies to Kindle for PC.

Wonderful....Maravilloso

This book is an absolute jem for those romantics that are out there!
It teaches you about the implications of a decaying aristocracy in the late 19th century in Brazil. But it also tends to take you way out there into the simplicity of the love between a man and a woman and the complications that can arise from it. Vita da Silva and León Cástro start an innocent game of flirtation and end up very far away from that.
I won't say anymore because it will spoil the book. If what you have read interests you, I highly recommend the book.

Vitoria da Silva, hija de uno de los más ricos barones del café del Valle de Paraíba conoce a León Castro, periodista abolicionista de dudoso origen en la hacienda familiar de Boavista y surgiendo una historia de amor que a golpe de malos entendidos, intrigas familiares, convencionalismos sociales, animadversiones personales y situaciones en general los une y los separa, les da la oportunidad de amarse y odiarse, de crecer juntos como personas o destruirse, de sincerarse o engañarse, de hacerce daño o protegerse mutuamente y todo esto bajo la mirada crítica de la alta sociedad ociosa de Río de Janeiro y de los esclavos que lo saben todo, hacen como que no comprenden nada, siempre alertas viendo como soplan los vientos económicos, políticos y sociales del momento que arruinará las fazendas, destruirá fortunas y los liberarán de las cadenas y donde todos al final tendrán que buscar un lugar en el caos que dió origen a una nueva era.
Una bonita y entretenida historia de amor, de saga familiar y una excelente crónica de época que nos describe la forma de vida y las costumbres de los ricos hacendados, la relación que tenían con los esclavos y las fatales consecuencias para sus fortunas, estilos de vida y poder político que les produjo la Ley Aurea el 13 de Mayo de 1888 cuando la princesa Isabel de Braganza (1846-1921) la firmó en nombre del Gobierno Imperial de Brasil poniendo fín a la esclavitud así como nos dá un extenso recorrido por la sociedad carioca en general y la mentalidad de sus habitantes tanto blancos como mulatos, negros libres y esclavos en general.
