If you want to be an ethical practictioner, then get the more recent edition!

If you are planning on being a current, practicing BCBA, then DO NOT GET THIS EDITION. It is not up-to-date with the latest code. The ethical code was revamped in 2016, so you should get the current edition, the 3rd edition.

Obviously, if you don't care about the changes in the code, then this book is fine. These authors do a great job getting the message across in an easy to understand way. But I highly recommend the new edition if you are practicing in the field.

Essential reading for future BCBAs!

If you plan to work toward becoming a BCBA, you MUST get this book! It is essential that all BCBAs know and understand their ethical responsibilities and how to handle some of the ethical challenges that can come about in the course of practice. A bit thick, terminology-wise, but it is geared toward graduate-level students so that is to be expected.

As a masters student in Behavior Analysis, this book is very helpful, and required. It gave many scenarios that were easy to follow and helped clarify some confusion. Definitely worth getting, especially if you are considering sitting for the BACB exam, as there are ethics questions on that test.

A charming third installment.

The Wedding Wallah by Farahad Zama is the third book of a series (starting with The Marriage Bureau for Rich People) set in my hometown, Vizag. No one ever writes books set in Vizag, so this fact alone almost guarantees that I'd love these books. However, they're also actually pretty well-written, have great characters, and more importantly, they have a lot of heart. They remind me a lot of the The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency books by Alexander McCall Smith - slow and somewhat sleepy, but not boring.

Anyway, enough about the series. The Wedding Wallah sees all of our favourite characters return: Mr. and Mrs. Ali's marriage bureau is still doing brisk business, Rehman has still not been cured of his idealism, Pari is still determined to be an independent young woman and Aruna is fully settled into her marriage, although she still helps out at the marriage bureau. We are introduced to a new character, Dilawar, who is from a wealthy and aristocratic family, but hasn't found a bride yet. His family, for whatever reason, believes that the relatively poor Pari would be a good bride for him, despite her widowed status and adopted son. Meanwhile the Naxalites (terrorists with communist ideologies) are growing increasingly active in the villages surrounding Vizag. Intertwined with these are a few stories from the marriage bureau side of things. And of course, people are falling in love all over the place.

The book is as charming as previous installments, and it left me wanting more, immediately. I'm not sure how much this has to do with my excitement whenever a place I know is mentioned (which happens a lot.) I was especially excited when the bookstore that I bought the book from was mentioned as a place that one of the characters bought books from!

I thought the Naxalite plot was a little too dramatic in comparison with the rest of the book; it was a little jarring. However, it still made sense. I think that these book really do capture Vizag very well. The only flaw that I can find is that the people sometimes seem too idealistic. This book is also slightly more racy than the other books, which was fine, but a tiny bit unexpected. I was also glad that the book addressed a few modern issues - the Naxalites are portrayed fairly, showing both the bad and the good, and I thought that the inclusion of gay rights in India was also a nice touch and a nice nod to the recent decriminalisation of homosexuality.

I'm just frustrated that I don't live in the UK, since that's the only way I can pre-order the next book on Amazon!

The Marriage Bureau adventures continue. . .

"The Wedding Wallah" was a lovely book that builds on the previous two installments in the series. Mr Zama has a talent for writing simply and clearly about India and its people and customs and the pressing social issues of the day. Over the course of the series, I have fallen in love with the Ali family, Aruna and her family and Pari and her adopted son Vasu. In this book, we are introduced to Dilawar, an old friend of Rehman, and a potential bridegroom for Pari. Dilawar is in love with a young man though and afraid to expose himself to condemnation from the society that he lives in. He is a wonderful addition to the storyline and I hope he will be a regular in the series. Along with the tales of Indian matchmaking, Mr. Zama returns to the country to examine the struggle between the poor farmers and big agricultural interests and then introduces us to a group of guerrillas that believe in kidnapping and causing mayhem in order to bring attention to their cause. It is here that I found that the transition from the business of love to the business of guerrilla warfare a bit jarring. The series until now was also quite innocent and left quite a bit to the imagination, however with the addition of the guerrillas, Aruna is placed into two different situations which (if this were a movie) would change the rating from "G" to "PG" or maybe "R". In some ways, "The Wedding Wallah" is like two different books. One of the books moves along slowly and sweetly and the other is just a bit too hectic. I did enjoy the resolution though and felt that the book went back on track once the guerilla story was resolved. In conclusion, it's a great book, just a little convoluted in parts. I'm hoping for another book in the series very soon and *I wish that Mrs. Ali would continue her writing exercises--they are delightful and informative.*

Everyday life in India

Mr Ali's marriage bureau is flourishing. His assistant, Aruna is about to take a break with her husband Ram and Pari - a cousin of Mr Ali's is going to take over from her for a time because she has lost her own job in a call centre. Pari lives opposite Mr and Mrs Ali and has an adopted son. She has received a proposal of marriage from a wealthy man which she is considering. As a widow she can choose her own marriage partner.

As other reviewers have mentioned this third book in the series covers much darker themes - the activities of a group of terrorists, the Naxilites, and the lack of acceptance of homosexuality in India. There are still many amusing incidents and a focus on the good aspects of human nature. Women look after sick relatives and put the family's interests before their own. Maybe some people seem too selfless to our Western eyes but it is not that long since women in the West would have been expected to exhibit the same behaviour.

I liked the way Mrs Ali is still working behind the scenes when she considers it necessary to influence the way things are going. People who read the first book in the series The Marriage Bureau for Rich People will recall the way she presented Aruna to Mr Ali as a suitable assistant. I also liked the insight this series gives into life in India today. People have mobile phones and computers but many aspects of their lives might seem primitive to Western eyes. Mrs Ali drying tamarinds and tomatoes in the sun seems odd to us as well as unhygienic. But there is something warm and friendly about the society these books portray and I always think that I can smell, hear and see everyday life when I read these books.

Great read & life lessons you don't realize you're learning

SYNOPSIS: Rufus Mayflower is a kid with a great business sense and imagination. When he decides that toothpaste costs too much, he starts his own toothpaste making business with local kids. From his meager beginnings with re-used baby food jars up to a fully professional operation with stockholders and a tube-filling machine, he rakes in the cash and confounds the leaders of the pharmaceutical industry with his methods.

MY TAKE:
This book (purchased at a garage sale) became one of the books I re-read repeatedly throughout my youth. Besides being a great story about how a kid with imagination and ingenuity can outsmart even grownups (which I loved as a kid), it also teaches you to avoid sexism and racism without being "preachy" about it.

Growing up in a very rural area (there was literally only one black family in our high school), the fact that the book's genius is black was a positive idea for me to take in. Not only that, but Rufus Mayflower refuses to treat his best friend differently because she's white...or even a girl. (She's Kate McInstrey if I recall the name right..I'm writing from work and don't have my copy immediately handy).

The book also subtly teaches you a little about marketing, product costs and even "price wars". I probably learned more business ideas from this book than many classes at school.

Sharing his 40-plus years of experience in overhauling and refitting a myriad of different sailboats for offshore cruising, Berman offers straight-forward advice on rigging selection, engines, ground tackle, safety gear, electronics installations, and the hull. --Practical Sailor

Berman Review by Karen Larson Minneapolis, Minnesota The subtitle, Refitting Used Sailboats for Blue-Water Voyaging, of Peter Berman s new book, Outfitting the Offshore Cruising Sailboat, tells why it s an important new reference for good old boaters. Peter s basic premise is that new offshore cruising sailboats are prohibitively expensive and somewhat uncommon, while the market in used cruising sailboats is rich and vast and flourishing. There s something there for everyone. His 45-year experience as a cruiser in nearly a dozen different designs (CCA through modern racing designs) is enlightening. While Peter has formed strong opinions about many features, he does not recommend one design type over another. He knows, perhaps better than most, that every sailboat is a compromise and that priorities and budgets will vary from sailor to sailor. What he offers is a series of observations and a logical review of onboard systems that will help any prospective offshore cruiser consider the pros and cons of each system, feature, and sailboat type. In the end, the reader of Outfitting the Offshore Cruising Sailboat will be able to determine which features are personally important and which have a lower priority. I chuckled occasionally at Peter s dry wit but found that I didn t agree with every word of his sage advice. I m just one sailor, after all, with one set of values and preferences, but I was surprised, for example, to note that Peter overlooked the value of freshwater sailboats, as they apparently do not figure in the experience of this East Coast (and beyond) sailor. Peter starts his discussion of good used boats by ranking the most expensive systems: the rig, the engine, and the ground tackle. As these are the most expensive items to replace, he gives each system a thorough and thoughtful critique based on his experiences as a cruiser. There are many nuggets here for every would-be cruiser. In particular, he includes good tips about good and bad construction features in the rig, bearing in mind intended use for coastal vs. offshore work. This section clearly spells out features to look for if you will be cruising offshore. Over all, Peter offers great advice about buying a good old cruising sailboat and how to refit it for several more decades of offshore cruising adventures. Like the rest of us, Peter has conflicts about the best possible cruising sailboat. After saying that larger is always better, that system redundancy is critically important, and that you should replace practically everything before going offshore, Peter admits that his first cruiser was probably his favorite. A primitively equipped wooden Dickerson, this boat cost only $16,000, had fewer systems to maintain, and was his most affordable cruiser. After telling readers they should probably invest the purchase price of the boat in the refit, and to replace all the important and expensive systems, he reminds us that the first priority is to just go. Time is the enemy, he says, so don t spend your life in endless outfitting. In the end, as in all things, it s up to the reader to make his own choices based on his own list of priorities. But Peter offers great advice that may help each reader rank his own list of priorities and consider some systems and construction methods that he may not have thought about. If you re still searching for your offshore sailboat and juggling the hundreds of variables, Peter Berman a guy who s been there and done that has some very useful advice for you. Read this book. Our thoughts are that it is VERY in depth and very well put together. If a person is serious about putting together a used boat for extended offshore cruising this is a MUST read. The depth that this book covers would shame most and I use the word MOST surveyors. The best use for this book would probably be for the person who already has this type of boat that would use it as a guide to improve/repair. An experienced hand gives forth on the many most important considerations and

likely costs of restoring a cruising sailboat. Estimates are a little daunting when added all up but still

much less than a comparable new boat. A valuable corrective for the casual dreamer.

Very thorough and hard-headed analysis of what does and does not stand up to long-term offshore use in the writer's experience. Little good news here for current owners. Example: I thought auxiliary diesels were bulletproof: Nope, they're not made for the long haul. He does like in-mast furling, though. Go figure.

Good solid review

I'm surprised at how easy it is to read and how much I'm learning. I'm not sure if I'm learning new things or just putting a lot of things together in a more organized way of thinking. Either way I have learned enough to make it a good purchase. When you're going offshore you can never be too careful or too prepared. This is helping me get better organized and make better decisions about how I spend my money on the boat. I recommend it.
